Welcoming the New Year is done in many different ways, although the people I polled this week, didn’t actually have that many different responses. For New Year’s Eve the most popular response was, “We went to a house party”. The house party has become the way to celebrate the new year in a more personal way with just a few close friends. A nice dinner together (at home or in a nice restaurant), a few social sips, games, hurrahs at midnight and then home. Sound like your Near Year’s? Or the next most popular response was “We just stayed home”. Some stayed up until midnight and some people responded that they spent the usual evening and in bed at the same time. The next response was “We babysat our grandchildren”. Wanting to help out our children by letting them have the night out and a sleep-in morning to start the New Year is also a nice thing. I know that many young people from this area took a bus and headed off to Guelph for the evening and were brought safely home. I heard of two dances around the area and both of them were very poorly attended. I guess dancing isn’t the New Year’s thing anymore. No matter how you celebrated I hope you all had Happy New Year and 2008 is great. Our own New Year’s wasn’t memorable but our Christmas was this year. This year we were able to have our children and significant others for all of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. No one had to rush off to the “other side” so it was eating, gifts, games, eating and so on. It was really nice to spend the time with our loved ones, that because of our busy schedules, is sometimes not as easy to do. Returning home to St. John, New Brunswick after spending more than a week with Jack and Donna Knight was daughter Joanne with husband Weldon and children, Andrew and Allison. They were here to spend Christmas with the family, enjoy a small gathering with the Gloor side and with brothers Brad and Christine and Steve and Marni. The men of the family also travelled off to London to see a London Knights hockey game. Speaking of hockey, the under-17 hockey tournament was being played in London and there were plenty of folks off to that. Getting tickets for Christmas were Chris and Matt Lee and Dan Taylor from Brett Lee and they were off to the JLC. Chris reports seeing the Ontario against Finland game which Ontario won 8-1. Chris noted how big the kids were on the team. It seemed the average size for the boys was over six feet and around 200 lbs. They played very well together with an O’Reilly boy from Kippen and a coach from Listowel making for a lot of interest from this area. There was a block of 50 tickets sold to a bunch of Seaforth-area folks. The seats were all filled and they were a noisy bunch. A little piece of history was also made last week and taken in by some local folks. The outdoor hockey game in Buffalo against Pittsburg was attended by Jack and Mary Helen McLachan. They received the tickets for Christmas and report it was a great game. They dressed really warmly and reportduring the regular game that theywere fine. It was only after goinginto overtime and then into theshootout, the cold seem to settle inand they were glad to get going. The Walton Women’s Institutemembers met on Jan. 4. Thepurpose of the meeting was todiscuss the future of their Branch. After several options including closing or amalgamation were discussed, the members decided to continue as a Branch. Women of the community are welcome to attend their meetings. Brian and Shelley McGavin were the hosts for a Huron County Plowing reunion last week. Attending were participants that had plowed at the plowing match in Crosby in 2007 from all around the area. They had a great get-together and discussed getting ready to plow in 2008 in Teeswater. Our sympathies, to the family of Ella Graber, a long-time resident of Brussels and to the families of Pat Shaw (McWhirter) who has many relatives in the Walton area. Our own family also suffered a loss at this time. Our uncle, Robert Stevens, brother of Leona McDonald and Margaret Rogerson, passed away Thursday. Robert was raised in Walton and after marriage to wife Marg, lived in London. They had three children who always loved coming to Walton to visit with Grandma and Grandpa Stevens. Robert was a joker who always had a great sense of humour and loved to tease everyone. He loved camping and the outdoors and since his retirement, travelling. The funeral services were held Monday and nephew Rick McDonald was pallbearer at the service at Lambeth. Returning from a great holiday with family and friends is a large group from the area. Leaving after Christmas, the group journeyed to Courcheval, France to spend time with John and Marci McCall MacBain. They flew from Toronto to London, England then to Geneva, Switzerland, then a 20-minute fly by helicopter had them in Courcheval. Making the journey were Murray and Sherry McCall, Orval, Lila and Jerry Storey, Marion Hunt, Jack, Doreen, and Jared McCall and Doug, Shawna, Jadon and Kolton O’Neill. They met up with Jason and Sherry McCall and Robin McCall and fiancée Talia in London and continued on together. They report having a great time and went skiing, snowboarding, swimming and spending a lot of time with the grandchildren watching them ski. Teaching them young is the thing to do. They returned after New Year’s to grand old Ontario. Mary McCall was in hospital and was unable to make the trip, but is hopefully released at this time. Hoping you feel better Mary. There was a small crowd at Duff’s United Church on Sunday. We hope that more will be on hand for the Sunday breakfast/brunch after church this Sunday. It will also be communion this Sunday. Rev. Sandra Yule would appreciate calls on any members who are sick or in need of a visitation within our church community. Contact her at 519-887- 8240.
