All stars The Try Hards from 94.5 The Bull teamed up with seven former NHLers to take on the Wingham Ironmen alumni all star team last Friday for the North Huron All-Star game in Wingham as part of North Huron Hockey Days. The NHLers must have brought some talent to the table, because they won the contest despite antics like ordering pizza to the bench in the third period and replacing their goalie with a pylon. (Shawn Loughlin photo) Atoms end season with style The Blyth Midget girls Black Ice broomball team faced off against Palmerston Friday night. The Palmerston team has improved and provided a good challenge for the Black Ice. The Blyth girls first chance came with Cassie Salverda in front of the net and the goalie down, but she flipped the ball right over the net. The Black Ice started to put the pressure on Palmerston. Their first goal came when Hayley Pavao’s shot rebounded to Niki Beyersbergen who fired the ball into the net. The Palmerston goalie did well to keep the Black Ice from running away with the game. The Black Ice managed one more goal when Pavao and Beyersbergen teamed up to get the ball to Karly Howard, who stuffed it into the corner of the net. Palmerston picked it up a bit later in the second half. A shot from the faceoff circle slipped past the Blyth goalie, Amy Root to put Palmerston on the scoreboard. Blyth came back and pounded Palmerston with shots in the last few minutes of play but could not beat the goalie. The game ended in a 2-1 win for the Black Ice. In a high scoring match Norm Fairles stoned Bob Campbell 12-8. Bill Deans loaded up his front end bringing out of retirement that master of rock control Keith Elston. They had things well under control from first rock to last and downed the Nelson Frank foursome 10-4. *** The Wingham club was well represented in the zone division of the Fairfield Mariott Challenge Bonspiel at Walkerton on the weekend by a rink skipped by Shawn Cottrill with brother Chris at lead and two of Shawn’s schoolmates at Windsor University the Laurin twins from Ayr, Mike and Rob. The boys started the bonspiel on fire soundly defeating Veitch from Listowel, Lewikoski from Goderich Maitland and Doig of Seaforth. This put the rink into the A finals against the Walkerton foursome skipped by Mike Niesen. The Cottrill rink picked up one in the first and blanked the second. Thenthe Walkerton rink took over and atthe end of the sixth were up 6-1.The Wingham boys, real competitors, did not give up and a big four in the seventh put them right back in the games with the score 6-5. There was excitement galore in the eighth. On Shawn’s last rock he made a terrific shot putting his rock through a narrow point. As the rock slid towards the button all eyes in the clubhouse were focused on the rock. Unfortunately the rock slid just inches too far and Walkerton had the victory. As this was the Wingham rink’s first loss they now faced the B side winners the Bell rink from Mount Forest. The winner would advance to the Ontario finals in two weeks at Trenton. One missed shot in the first end put the Cottrill rink in a big hole as they gave up five. A gamble to close the gap in the second backfired and the boys gave up another four. Down an unsurmountable amount in the fourth the boys admitted defeat and congratulated their opponents. Despite coming so close to qualifying for the Ontario finals the boys had a great experience, played some terrific games against tough opposition and the club was certainly mighty proud of them.
