Brussels Tykes recently played an
exhibition game against Tees-
water.
Brussels had a great game. In the
first period they scored two goals.
Bulging the twine were Avery
McArter, assisted by Dana
Dolmage, and Noah Terpstra,
assisted by Darren Fritz.
Brussels added two more in the
second, scored by Terpstra, assisted
by Cameron Gibson, and Teddy
Jacklin.
Teeswater finally got on the board
with two quick ones, but Brussels
scored two in the third. Avery
McArter’s goal was assisted by
Ronan Jarad and Darren Evans, with
help from Nolan Johnston netted the
final goal.
Farren Thompson played well in
net for this 6-3 effort.
Brussels next played Seaforth.
This was another great game, a nail
biter.
Brussels started the game, with
Terpstra scoring, assisted by Nick
McArter.
Seaforth scored quickly after.
Avery McArter lit the light with an
assist from Hudson Smith.
Seaforth came back strong and
tied it up in the third.
A. McArter came back with
another, assisted by Sarah Strome.
The game ended with a 3-3 tie.
Thompson played well.
The Tykes are in the Wallace Fun
Days tournament this weekend.
The Blyth Icedogs hosted their
latest game against the Seaforth
Stealers on Friday, Jan. 4.
The Icedogs were scored on at the
top of the first period, after the ball
went off a Blyth defenceman’s foot
in his attempt to clear it from the
net.
Blyth kept digging for the ball and
managed to ward off their opponents
on a powerplay after receiving a
penalty for high sticking. Graham
Bedard showed great skill when
covering the net as he made many
saves for his team throughout the
game.
Seaforth caught a lucky break
when once again they scored by
tipping the ball into the net after a
Blyth player tried to clear it away
from the net.
Blyth tightened up their lineup in
an attempt to score during a
powerplay, but their passes kept
getting intercepted by the Stealers.
Blyth had some nice shots on net,
but Seaforth’s keen keeper and some
contact with the goalpost instead of
the mesh denied the Icedogs a
chance to get on the scoreboard.
After regulation time the score
was 2-0 for Seaforth.
The teams practised overtime and
played some four-on-four without
goalies. Blyth had some nice passes
and was able to manoeuver the ball
around Seaforth’s last man after
defence Kurtis Kolkman passed the
ball up to Mike Hogan for a goal for
Blyth.
Blyth managed to stop their
opponents from scoring after
receiving a penalty during overtime.
The ball went into Seaforth’s net, but
the goal didn’t count, since it was
shot in from in front of the
centreline. This seemed to deflate
the team as they allowed their
opponents to score four.
The Blyth Icedogs and Seaforth
Stealers have met several times
during this broomball season with
the games always ending in a close
score. As of this date the Icedogs
have yet to declare a win against
Seaforth.
The Brussels Novice Reps have
been very busy playing some puck
this past week.
They first faced off against
Milverton on home ice. They were
keen to go and go they did. The final
score was 9-2 for Brussels.
Racking up the points were Wyatt
Machan with a hattrick, Kailey
Wheeler and Logan Kellington each
with two, Connor Bridge and Noah
Terpstra. Assisting them were
Bridge, Machan, Kellington and
Konrad McArter.
On the defensive side, Dylan
McNeil, Cody Harding, Jamie
Perrault and Dean Scarrow assisted
the goalie Derrick Waechter with 17
saves.
The next game saw Brussels face
off against Seaforth in a Sunday
afternoon exhibition game. It was
neck and neck but Brussels came out
ahead with Waechter making 19
saves to help his team take a 5-4
win. Scoring this game were
Machan with four and Terpstra with
one. Assisting were Bridge and
Delayna Smith.
Daniel Fritz and Bennett Newell
were back on the bench for this
game.
Last Friday night was a new year,
new game. Brussels was hot to show
they could keep up the winning
streak and start the new year off
right. They did just that as they
played against Harriston on home
ice. After making several shots and
passing and defending, Brussels
came out on top with a 4-3 win.
Scoring this game were Machan
with two, Terpstra and Kellington.
Assisting the goals were Terpstra
and Kellington. Hot on the defence
were Perrault and Newell.
Saturday they were up bright and
early for a 9 a.m. game in the
Lucknow tournament.
Brussels fell to the hosts in the
first game.
The second game saw these
players face off against Drayton.
Drayton was out for that win, no
matter what. Brussels coach, Greg
Wheeler, told his team to go out and
play as if they were playing road
hockey. There was passing and
defending all around.
Drayton was quick to take a 2-0
lead by the end of the first period.
Kellington was able to squeeze one
in near the end of the second period,
making it 3-1 Drayton. In the third
period, the kids knew they needed to
put on the pressure and ended the
game with a 4-4 tie. The second goal
was netted by Wheeler, the third by
Kellington and the tie goal by Smith
with only 10 seconds left on the
clock. Unsuccessful shots on net by
this time were 13 for Brussels and
11 for Drayton.
In sudden death overtime, after
passing and defending, each side
had made three attempts. It was the
fourth attempt by Drayton that gave
them the win.
Wheeler said this was the hardest
and best he had seen his Brussels
Novices play this year.
Brussels will face off against
Wingham this Friday night, at 6:30
p.m. in Brussels.
Busy week for Novice Reps
In Lower Lakes Female Hockey
League action this weekend, the
Saugeen Maitland Lightning AA
Midgets won and tied on home ice.
On Saturday, Brianne Wheeler,
Brussels, played outstanding in net
to gain a well-deserved shutout
against the Kitchener Rangers. The
score was 3-0 with goals from
Tammy Freiburger, Wingham,
Victoria Bertrand, Port Elgin and
Kelsey Vanderveen, Lucknow.
On Sunday, after largely
outshooting the Stratford Aces, the
nail-biter of a game ended in a 1-1
tie. The lone Saugeen Maitland goal
was scored by Eastlyn Bellamy,
Sauble Beach.
The girls will next be in action
this Friday through Sunday in the
24th Annual Scarborough Sharks
Ice Trials Hockey Tournament.
The Lightning fell out of
contention in the quarter-finals of
the MGHL tournament the last
weekend of Dec.
The girls opened the first day with
a 5-1 victory over Michigan and a
tough 1-0 loss against Waterloo.
On the Saturday they had a 4-3
win over Etobicoke #34 sending
hem into the quarter-finals against
Etobicoke #28. The Lightning ran
into a long string of penalty killing
throughout all three periods, giving
them little chance for offence, which
resulted in a 4-3 loss sending them
home.
Tammy Freiburger, Wingham, led
the weekend Lightning scoring with
six goals. Dru Austin, Goderich had
two and four single tallies were put
in by Eastlyn Bellamy, Sauble
Beach, Ona Mezenberg, Owen
Sound, Kelsey Vanderveen,
Lucknow and Karisa Ross,
Palmerston.
The Lightning had solid
goaltending from Brianne Wheeler,
Brussels.
A worthy challenge
The Kitchener-Waterloo Sidewinders paid a visit to Blyth last week for a game of sledge
hockey. The Sidewinders played a handful of the Blyth Bulldogs who gave the sleds a try. The
Sidewinders proved to be more at home in the sleds, skating circles around the Bulldogs on
their maiden voyage in sledge hockey. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
