The Citizen, 2008-01-03, Page 18We hope everyone had a Merry
Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Christmas is a joyous time to
spend with family and friends,
mending broken family ties,
exchanging gifts, traveling to visit
family, celebrating the birth of Jesus
and extending your hand in friend-
ship and in the spirit of Christmas.
We hope everyone took the opportu-
nity to enjoy one and all of the joys
of Christmas.
Changes around Walton before
Christmas included the dismantling
of Nelson Ryan’s barn. Board by
board and timber by timber the barn
was taken down and then the remain-
ing straw was burned to leave only
the cement work behind.
The crop circle at Walton’s P & H
yard was also dismantled last week.
The over 20,000 tonnes of corn that
had been covered by the unique corn
storage system was augered into
trucks and wagons etc. until it was
gone. It only took 25 hours to move
the corn.
The celebration of Christmas
begins long before the day arrives.
The Anna McNichol family gath-
ered a month ago and the McClure
family Christmas that would have
been held on the stormy weekend
was held on the Monday after the
storm at the home of Laverne and
Nita McClure. Some McClure fami-
ly members were unable to attend
but a great time was had. Ray
McClure from Alberta was here and
enjoyed visiting with his family.
A friends celebration was held at
the home of Neil and Marie
McGavin. Attending the evening of
eating, reminiscing and enjoying
each other’s company were Jim and
Ann Bosman, Howard and Audrey
Hackwell, Jeanne Kirkby, John
Gaunt, Rev. Sandra Yule, Gerry and
Anne Ryan and Don and Pat Nolan.
A celebration of a different sort
was the surprise 75th birthday party
for Pearl McCallum held before
Christmas. Ron and Betty
McCallum hosted all McCallum
family members as well as Russel
and Lorna McCallum from St.
Marys.
The weekend preceding Christmas
day was a popular time for families
to gather. At the Walton Hall, the
Zehr family gathered to enjoy a deli-
cious turkey dinner provided by Hall
board members, Jo-Ann McDonald
and Barb Durell, with helper Nick
Durell. Over 25 family members had
dinner, then played games, cards,
and visited.
The Lee family gathered at the
home of Chris and Judy Lee to cele-
brate and exchange their gifts. A
wonderful meal, good fun and
laughter with three little grandchil-
dren made Christmas a wondrous
time.
Clint and Judy Emmrich, Jamie
and Katie were off to Kitchener toattend the Emmrich Christmas. Aday in the city spending time withfamily is always great. Mary Humphries travelled to Kimand Gene Kruse and family inBayfield to celebrate. Son Bob anddaughter Nora plus family membersenjoyed the day together. The Harold and Pearl McCallumfamily gathered at their home early
as well. Children Ron, Paul, Marion,
Joyce and Carl and their families and
Pearl Hartman had a great day
together.
Home for Christmas and to spend
time with her family was Carali
McCall. She was home for two
weeks with parents Murray and
Sherry McCall. She caught up with
friends and other family and cele-
brated Christmas day at home with
them and sister Shawna and Doug,
Kolton and Jadon.
Grandma Mary McCall was in the
hospital and remains there at this
time. We send our speedy recovery
wishes to Mary.
Carali was off on Boxing Day to
return to England and to attend a
wedding.
Spending more than a few days
home with parents Mert and Doreen
Hackwell was Blaine Hackwell from
Milwaukee. Also joining them for a
couple of days were Craig, Sherry,
Chase, MacKenzie, Spencer and
Aiden Hackwell from St.
Catharine’s.
Christmas Eve is another time to
gather and that’s what Fred and
Heidi McClure and family did. They
traveled to Mitchell to Bill Nater and
family’s home.
The weather certainly co-operated
as the traveling conditions were just
great for Christmas day. Marilyn
McDonald’s family gathered at the
home of Jeanne and Rob Dionne’s
at St. Joseph. As with big families,
not everyone could be there, but
most were able to.
The Murray Dennis family gath-
ered together at the home farm and
food and gifts were forefront in
everyone’s mind.
Howard and Audrey Hackwell had
daughter Pamela and Elliott
Hackwell as Christmas dinner
guests.
Mary Humphries was the guest at
Mike and Kathy Ryan’s for her din-
ner day.
The Pryce family gathered at the
Kinburn Hall. Harold and Naomi,
enjoyed food, fun and a fantastic
time.
Travelling to Fergus were Steve
and Rita Bowers and family to join
Rita’s family for Christmas.
Greg and Nanci Ducharme enter-
tained Ross and Marg Bennett for
Christmas Day activity along with
Barb Dunbar.
Boxing Day probably had just as
many families gathering such as the
McGavins. Arriving in from North
Bay were daughter Heather and
Bryan with Jared, Jessica, Hayden
and Ella to join the rest of the
McGavin children, Brian, Jeff,and
Cathy and their families for their
celebrations.Gerry and Anne Ryan had theirfamily, Paul, Chris and Mike andfamilies to their home. Jim and Barb Fritz had their chil-dren and their families on BoxingDay.Ross and Marg Bennett hosted sonPeter with Louann and Emilee onThursday for their Christmas. Greg,Nanci, Evan and Danielle Ducharme
joined them.
The Gerald Watson family gath-
ered on Thursday at the home of
Carman and Mary Bernard for a cou-
ple of days of celebrating.
Heading into the weekend,
Howard and Audrey Hackwell host-
ed Eddie, Patricia and little
Sebastian Andrades and Dean and
Kelly Hackwell for their Christmas
celebrations.
The hosts for the Bernard
Christmas were Gord and Irma
Pryce.
Joining Paul and Dianne
McCallum for a few days were Matt
and Jamie Jackson from Ohio.
Staying at Chris and Cindy
Poland’s were Vince, Andrea and
Jenny Jackson. They all had a great
time visiting together before heading
back to Ohio after a family brunch
on Sunday.
The Walton Inn held its staff
Christmas party at Cinnamon Jim’s
on Friday. It was a pleasure to have
someone else do the cooking and the
serving for a change.
The Walton Hall was the place to
hold the Brindley Christmas. Barry
and Karen Hoegy were the hosts for
the day and a smaller turnout of just
over 20 or so enjoyed the Christmas
visit.
Mike and Dorothy Gulutzen, who
have moved back to Grey Twp., were
there to catch up with family. Barry
and Karen were pleased to have
daughter Sherry and Eric Delay from
Morristown, Tennessee join them at
home for Christmas, but they had to
leave Boxing Day to make the 12-
hour drive home because of work.
Walton Hall also was the meeting
place for the Grobbink Christmas on
Sunday. Jack and Marianna Ryan
were the hosts for the potluck meal
and afternoon of visiting.
We had my family Christmas on
Sunday in Mitchell, a postponement
of our Boxing Day date. My mother
was admitted to hospital on
Christmas day for a few days but is
feeling better and was released on
Sunday, so we gathered to welcome
her home.
It was a simpler and shorter day,
but was a chance to visit and see our
nephew from the west before his
departure later that day.
Another reason to celebrate is the
sound of wedding bells and they
rang on Saturday for the nuptials of
John van Vliet and Susan Jared.
They were married at Walton’s
Duff’s United Church in a small pri-
vate ceremony and then enjoyed a
wedding dinner at the Fireside Café
in Wingham. The reception was at
the BMG Community Centre attend-
ed by over 200 people
A late lunch was served by theWalton UCW. It was really great to see the vanVliet sisters Debbie, Janis andJoyann.Keep watch while being out andabout for poor lost Sadie. She is alost Jack Russell that four little chil-dren are missing terribly. She’swhite with a black spot on her faceand tail. The Roths from Walton
Road are missing her.
Celebrating birthdays at Christmas
were Jean Bewley, Monique Baan,
John. W. Brown, Pearl McCallum,
Clayton Fraser, Alice Searle, Ryan
Bremner, Michelle Blake, Anne
Curreri, Kerry Dale, Mark Gillis,

Christmas Eve at Walton United
Church was very well attended with
an almost full house. Rev. Sandra
Yule conducted the service.
The Walton band, with Phyllis
Mitchell, Graeme Craig, Keith
Wilbee, Marion Godkin, Pearl
McCallum, Patty Banks, Marie
McGavin, Glenda Morrison and
Gloria Wilbee, played before the
service. They also played during the
offering.
The lighting of the Christ candle
was done by Patty Banks and Tyler
Leslie Ribey. Special music was also
performed by Brandy, Brooke and
Tyler with a song composed by
Brandy and sung by the two girls.
Others taking part in the service
by reading the Christmas story in
verse were Neil McGavin, Ryan
Baan, Kevin Wilbee, Rev. Yule,
Abby McGavin and Graeme Craig.
Special music was also provided by
Keith Wilbee and Glenda Morrison.
It was a lovely service with the
lighting of small candles for the
singing of Silent Night.
Full house for
Duff’s service
