The ref-in-chief would be responsible for finding refs, getting the refs trained at a local clinic, scheduling the refs for all home games, and making sure the refs hand in their time sheets for payment. Anyone interested in this position should contact a Brussels Minor Soccer executive. Members are Kathy Nichol, Thea Harding, John VanVliet, Susan Jared. New directors are also needed. It is time for new blood. The executive is hoping people will consider volunteering so soccer can continue in Brussels. Minor soccer needs ref-in-chief The Saugeen Maitland Midget AA Lightning girls won both their battles away on the road this weekend of Dec. 22-23 in the Western Division of the Lower Lakes Female Hockey League moving them back into a three-way tie with Stratford Aces and London Devilettes with 25 points. Their record in league play is 10- 1-5, heading into the MGHL Annual Hockey Tournament this weekend in Mississauga. Saturday, the girls had a strong 5-1 win over the Sarnia Sting with a hattrick coming from Tammy Freiburger (Wingham) and a pair of goals from Lindsey Ceaser (Owen Sound). On Sunday the girls pulled out a 3-2 win over the Waterloo Ravens with scoring coming from three different directions, Victoria Bertrand (Port Elgin), Ona Mezenberg (Owen Sound) and Ceaser. The puck drops here Jack Lee drops the puck to start the game between the 1972 OMHA Blyth PeeWee champs and the 1993 OMHA Blyth Bantam champs on Friday night in Blyth. The old guys won the contest skating away with a 5-4 victory. They did, however, have a little help. Retired NHLer Bob Probert was the guest player. He was also on hand to sign autographs. Both teams played extremely well to try and get the upper hand. All the lines were well matched as the puck was passed back and forth countless times. Hayden TenPas and Mitch Kellington scored for Brussels, assisted by Lexi Smith and Ben Hruska. In the end, Brussels skated away with a 2-1 win. Solid in net for Brussels was Matt McNichol. Now, Brussels waits to hear who they will face off against in the first round of playdowns. Brussels Atoms net 2-1 victory The Brussels Novice Reps lost two games recently, one to Wingham, and one to Elma Logan. Scoring for Brussels were Noah Terpstra, Wyatt Machan, and Logan Kellington. Assisting them were Machan, Kellington, Terpstra and Delayna Smith. Brussels will play several games in the next two weeks as they make up games not played due to snow.
