THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JANUARY 3, 2008.The senior choir of LondesboroughUnited Church began the service onChristmas Sunday, Dec. 23 bysinging the anthem Let Our GladnessKnow No End. Later in the servicethey suggested to the world, ComeOn, Ring Those Bells.
Two candles were lit that morning
in the Advent wreath. The candle of
joy was lit by Ed and Mary Salverda.
Tom and Marjorie Duizer lit the light
of love and offered verses from that
well-known passage of scripture, 1
Corinthians 13.
A young man, one of the United
Church’s Overseas Mission
personnel working in the Middle
East, received a Christmas card from
someone he didn’t know. That lady
was remembering him so far from
home trying to share the Christian
faith and thanking him for his work.
The card reminded him that he wasnot alone and we are not alone for thebest Christmas gift anyone hasreceived was the gift of Christbecoming human.Gail Lear read the minute formissions which reminded the
congregants that this work is
supported by monies donated to the
United Church Mission and Service
Fund.
During the children’s time at the
front, Rev. Pat Cook spoke about
traditions and customs that families
adopt to make each of their
Christmas celebrations special.
In Scandinavia, Poland and
Czechoslovakia, foods, white wafers,
fruit soup and almond pudding, are
important customs. Great Britain is
remembered for the crackers filled
with small treats. Pinatas, filled with
gifts, are the part of the celebrationsin Mexico. Some of these customs have madetheir way into our celebrations.A Man of Mercy was the title of themessage Rev. Cook delivered thatmorning. She took on the persona of
Joseph and gave insight into him and
the customs of this day.
Joseph was a descendant of King
David and it seemed odd that he
should be a lowly carpenter. He was a
widower living in Bethlehem,
tending a flock of sheep on family
land.
Due to a series of difficulties with
prices and weather, he sold his land
to King Herod. Rather than work
with the sheep for the king on his
own land, he moved to Nazareth
where he had a cousin who could
help him raise his two young
daughters. Moreover, he was a manof faith who felt called by God toNazareth. There, as recounted in Matthew 1:18-24, God, in the form of an angel, came to him in a dream and revealeda grand plan. Being a man of
sensitivity and mercy, he accepted
Mary as his wife offering protection
to her and the young child. She
would surely have been an outcast
otherwise.
“How do you stand up to the test of
time?” asked Rev. Cook. God will
work His plan for each person in
mysterious ways. People need to be
faithful servants in their everyday
lives. The most special gift each can
give or receive is the gift of love from
God, she reminded.

Happy New Year, everyone!
Yes, here we are at the beginning
of a brand new year or a brand new
page in life. What plans do you have
in mind to make it a memorable
one?

more able to take action now that the
bustle of the holiday season is
over.

Too late for the last edition of this
paper, I received notice that a former
resident of the village had passed
away. Funeral services were held on
Dec. 22 for Jack Potter.
As a result of a stroke, Jack had
been a resident of the Forest Heights
Nursing Home in Kitchener since
leaving Londesborough.
Condolences may be sent to his
widow, Phyllis, at 145 Overlea
Dr., Apt. 101, Kitchener, ON N2M
5B7.
As the media reminded us many
times during the weeks leading up to
Christmas, there are many in our
world who would find the season
difficult financially.
However those of us who live
in such small communities expect
to be shielded from the thefts that
some folk feel driven to in hard
times.
The Bernier family of Anthony’s
Lane lost the lighted reindeer from
their front lawn sometime on Dec.
20. The children especially miss
these Christmas decorations.
From the size of the footprints, it
was not a young person who needed
these deer.

PEOPLE AROUND
LONDESBORO No decision will be made about
renovations to the Morris-Turnberry
municipal office until after a public
meeting is held in January.
At the Dec. 18 meeting of council,
deputy-mayor Jim Nelemans
suggested delaying the decision on
an addition to the office building
until after the meeting, at which the
public will be invited to discuss the
results of a survey of residents’
opinions about the future of their
municipality.
“That’s a valid point,” said
councillor Mark Beaven. “Maybe
there are ideas the public would
bring that would tie in with this.”
Though staff is finding it difficult
to do their job in the office now,
holding off until the public was
involved might win more public
support, he said.
Also affecting the effort to move
forward more quickly are the new
accessibility standards that will
come into place in 2010 said Nancy
Michie, administrator clerk-
treasurer. To meet the standards the
office will need to provide a
handicapped-accessible washroom
and lower the counter. It made sense
that these improvements be included
in any renovations, she said.
Councillors voted to put off a
decision until the first meeting after
the public meeting. In the meantime
they’ve asked chief building official
Jeff Layton to look at what needs to
be done to make the new plans fit
with accessibility requirements.
