Their concentration span is short. They become easily bored. In the midst of a room full of toys, they will suddenly announce, “There is nothing to do”, and demand that an instant recreation pro gram be introduced. Thus it is a wise Mother or “Sitter” who can produce on demand, a repertoir of games to beguile the’ seemingly end less off-hours of childhood. A pack of playing cards can be the answer to keeping children happy and amused. There are many card games that children can enjoy-gameswith simple rules, fast action and uncomplicated drama dear to the heart of childhood. The next time your young _ fry demand “Something to do**, why not set them to play “Rol ling Stone”? Here is a game with action aplenty. Indeed, it is called “Rolling Stone” be cause the cards roll back and forth so often from one player to another. Any number may play. For four players, only the 32 high est cards in the deck are used from Ace to Seven in each suit, (If five play, the Sixes and Fives are left in the pack. If play, only the Deuces are six re- Bacon A piece of back bacon is de licious for dinner when baked and glazed, and is ideal for a small family. Bacon which has not been rolled in cornmeal is best, but you can scrape off the coating of meal if that is all that is available. BAKED BACK BACON 2 poind piece of back bacon, 1/4 cup red currant jelly, 2 • teaspoons cornstarch, 3 table spoons orange juice.' Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Remove transparent casing from the piece of back bacon. Place it, fat side up, on rack in shallow pan. If using a meat thermometer, insert it so tip is in centre of the meat. Bake, uncovered, in prehea* ted 325 degree oven for about one hour and 15 minutes. Meanwhile, melt jelly in a small saucepan. Combine corn, starch and orange juice until free of lumps. Add to melted jelly and cook, stirring con. stantly, until smoothly thick. KEN PICKETT and BOB CAMPBELL DID YOU PUT THE moved. This will give each player eight cards.) The object is to be the first to get rid of all your cards. Deal the cards around-three at a time, then two, then three, The player on the dealer’s left then leads any, card. There are no trumps. Everyone must follow suit if he can. If everybody plays to the trick, each one being able to follow suit, the highest card played wins. The trick is gather ed in and laid aside, face-down, not to be used again and the one who wins it leads for the next trick. When anyone cannot follow suit, he ,does not play a card. Instead, he must pick up and add to his hand any card or cards already played on that trick. And'he then leads another suit. For example, if Bob leads a Spade, and Mary, who is the next player, has no Spade, she must pick up the Card Bob played, add it to her hand and lead some other suit. If Bob leads a Spade and Mapy plays a Spade on it, then Ellen plays a Spade, but Tom has no Spade, Tom must pick up the three cards played thus far, add them to his hand and lead another suit. The one who is first out of cards wins the game. ened. Set aside until needed. After bacon has baked for, about one hour, remove it from the oven and spread with glaz. ing mixture. Then return to the 325 degree oven and bake for another 15 to 20 minutes, or until meat is well done and the glaze has set. (Meat ther. mometer should read 170 de. grees.) BROWN SUGAR GLAZE If you prefer a more tradional glaze, prepare the back bacon and bake for one hour as dir. ected above. Then remove from the oven and brush with corn syrup or liquid honey. Com bine 1/3 cup brown sugar, 1 teaspoon flour and 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard; add just enough . vinegar to make a thick paste. Spread this paste over the par tially cooked bacon and stud, with whole cloyes. Return to the 325 degree oven for 15 io 20 minutes, basting occasion ally with glazing mixture that drips into pan.
