Reeve Frank McFadden was returned to office by ac­ clamation, as was Dr. G.L. Morgan Smith, school trustee. Six nominees will appear on the ballot paper for council. These include present coun­ cillors Oddleifson, Merner and Sturgeon, and alsoRobertSnell,' Harry Baker and Fred Arkell.- Called on ' to address those present, Eddie Oddleifson thanked those who nominated him and said that he hoped that council had not offended the electorate by their actions and will continue to do his best for everyone in Bayfield if re­ elected. Mert Merner proferred thanks but no rash promises. Reeve McFadden, gave a com- NOMINEE prehensive report of the many objectives achieved during 1967 and mentioned major items of unfinished business on which they are, even now, working hard. He paid tribute to Mert Merner for his organization of the Community Centre project, in which he was ‘ably assisted by the many 'who had con. tributed. He briefly referred to the Rollarena ladies, the Lions Club and the many other or­ ganizations which make Bay- field a “go-ahead” community. This year’s council, said the Reeve, have purchased the new municipal offices, had maps of the village prepared, purchased office equipment, completed payments on the road grader and the gravel pit, cleared Cameron Street, chiefly to im­ prove drainage, cleaned up the north docks with the co-opera­ tion of the fisherman, and had installed some new street light­ ing. He paid tribute to the tremendous amount of work Robert Snell spoke briefly on his intentions if elected, and in particular felt that he could represent the young families of Bayfield and would stand behind any reasonable issue to make Bayfield a quiet but more pros­ perous place in which to live. Jack Sturgeon said that he had enjoyed being on council. He endorsed the Reeve’s state­ ments, and said that he hoped to be privileged to assist in completing the majoi’ items of unfinished business. Smith, gave an account of his two-year trustee­ ship' of Bayfield’s interests Area School Board No„ 1. mentioned overcrowding BrucefiQld School due to influx of children whose parents are in the RCAF oi’ working at CFB Clinton. He said that as of January 1, 1969, the school boards will be replaced by a County Board of Education mak­ ing it possible to make better use of classroom space at Zurich, Hensall and elsewhere; he felt that if new building could be avoided during 1968, school buses could be reduced in numbers and children living neai’ other schools would not be forced to go to Brucefield. Meanwhile the board room, the library, and, if necessary, the stage will' be used as class­ rooms. He said that the mill rate should remain steady in 1968 and might even decrease in the near future. WISH TO SOLICIT YOUR VOTE ON DECEMBER 4th, 1967 Harry Baker thanked 'Leroy Poth and Fred Clift for nomin­ ating him and said that he would proceed to “run down” council. He qualified the term “run down” and said he merely wanted to give his personal opinion of previous and present reeves and council members. He said that the “township boys” had done a goon job- before the re-incorporation, but had been “a bit out of touch with Bayfield”, He compli. mented the village clerk.and the Rollarena Committee. He re­ ferred to the work done by Fred Clift on re-incorporating the village, and said that if he had not done it, he had always promised, on retirement, to do it himself. He referred brief­ ly to Mert Merner’s father and Jack Sturgeon’s grandfather and many other old time residents. He also complimented E. Odd- leifson, John Lindsay, the as­ sessor, the tax collector and the two school board represen­ tatives, He said that he felt conspicuous by his absence from previous council meetings and excused it on the grounds of his work for the church, hospital, ways and means com­ mittee of the Community Centre, his membership of the “Senior Citizens club” and his daily job. Dr. G.L.M, Smith said that Fred Arkell had asked to be nominated before going over- seas .on an extended trip - he expects to return by March. Reeve McFadden then took the chair and answered questions from the floor. The United Church Women of Grace Church met last Wed- nesday at the home of Mrs. Argyle Lockhart. In the absence of the president, Mrs. Chester Sturdy presided over the meet­ ing. A reading “This is the Holy Land” was given by Mrs. Tom Sowerby. A chapter in the Study Book on the life of “Ruth” was given by Mrs. Art Jongejan. The secretary’s report was given by Mrs. William Town­ shend and the treasurer’s report by Mrs. Tom Sowerby. The various committee’s re­ ported on the work. It was decided to have an ex­ change of gifts at the December meeting which will be held at the home of Mrs. Don Beck, Bayfield, on Friday evening, December 15.
