Keen interest in Nomination
By Audrey Bellchamber
Bayfield again showed keen
interest in its own affairs on
Monday, when more than 40
people gathered to nominate
councillors for 1968-69.
Reeve Frank McFadden was
returned to office by ac
clamation, as was Dr. G.L.
Morgan Smith, school trustee.
Six nominees will appear on
the ballot paper for council.
These include present coun
cillors Oddleifson, Merner and
Sturgeon, and alsoRobertSnell,'
Harry Baker and Fred Arkell.-
Called on ' to address those
present, Eddie Oddleifson
thanked those who nominated
him and said that he hoped
that council had not offended
the electorate by their actions
and will continue to do his best
for everyone in Bayfield if re
elected.
Mert Merner proferred
thanks but no rash promises.
Reeve McFadden, gave a com-
NOMINEE
prehensive report of the many
objectives achieved during 1967
and mentioned major items of
unfinished business on which
they are, even now, working
hard. He paid tribute to Mert
Merner for his organization of
the Community Centre project,
in which he was ‘ably assisted
by the many 'who had con.
tributed. He briefly referred to
the Rollarena ladies, the Lions
Club and the many other or
ganizations which make Bay-
field a “go-ahead” community.
This year’s council, said the
Reeve, have purchased the new
municipal offices, had maps of
the village prepared, purchased
office equipment, completed
payments on the road grader
and the gravel pit, cleared
Cameron Street, chiefly to im
prove drainage, cleaned up the
north docks with the co-opera
tion of the fisherman, and had
installed some new street light
ing. He paid tribute to the
tremendous amount of work
Robert Snell spoke briefly
on his intentions if elected, and
in particular felt that he could
represent the young families of
Bayfield and would stand behind
any reasonable issue to make
Bayfield a quiet but more pros
perous place in which to live.
Jack Sturgeon said that he
had enjoyed being on council.
He endorsed the Reeve’s state
ments, and said that he hoped
to be privileged to assist in
completing the majoi’ items of
unfinished business.

Area School Board No„ 1.
mentioned overcrowding
BrucefiQld School due to
influx of children whose parents
are in the RCAF oi’ working at
CFB Clinton. He said that as of
January 1, 1969, the school
boards will be replaced by a
County Board of Education mak
ing it possible to make better
use of classroom space at
Zurich, Hensall and elsewhere;
he felt that if new building
could be avoided during 1968,
school buses could be reduced
in numbers and children living
neai’ other schools would not
be forced to go to Brucefield.
Meanwhile the board room, the
library, and, if necessary, the
stage will' be used as class
rooms. He said that the mill
rate should remain steady in
1968 and might even decrease in
the near future.

He said that the “township
boys” had done a goon job-
before the re-incorporation, but
had been “a bit out of touch
with Bayfield”, He compli.
mented the village clerk.and the
Rollarena Committee. He re
ferred to the work done by
Fred Clift on re-incorporating
the village, and said that if he
had not done it, he had always
promised, on retirement, to do
it himself. He referred brief
ly to Mert Merner’s father and
Jack Sturgeon’s grandfather and
many other old time residents.
He also complimented E. Odd-
leifson, John Lindsay, the as
sessor, the tax collector and
the two school board represen
tatives, He said that he felt
conspicuous by his absence

and excused it on the grounds
of his work for the church,
