The Snell family was one of
the pioneer families of Huron
County and the worthy member
had many stories of the early
days in this area.
Rev-. Snell is also a descen
dant of Col. Anthony Van
Egmond and told of the CoU
onel’s part, along with that
of the Canada Company, the
Dunlop’s, Sir John Galt and
others in bringing in settlers
and building roads. Col. Van
Egmond had teams on the roads,
which he had helped to build,
constantly transporting settlers
mostly from the Canada Com-
pany, across country to their
lots.
On July 17, 1963 a National
Historic Plague was unveiled
at Egmondville and Rev. Harold
Snell, the great, great grand
son, led in prayer at that cer
emony.
Tribute was also paid to the
work of other pioneers, Jonas
Gibbings,. the Vanderburgh Bro-
thers, William Rattenbury,Ric
hard Twaites, Malcalm McTag-
gart, Col. Rance' and Henry
Ransford. '
It was a fascinating talk and
those present felt that they had
learned many items of history
of this part of Huron County.
