His. father was1 Herbert Oakes and ^grandfather Joseph Henry Oakes. . Treasurer Whitely The present treasurer, H. Ben Whitely, comes from the oldest of any of the eight families in this ,story. The Whitely’s came to Godbrioh Township in 1832. In 1838, Ben’s great grandfather, Andrew was recorded as a Com­ missioner or Councillor. Ben was appointed treasurer in 1946 and tax collector in 1959. His father-, Charles A. Whitely was also township treasurer from 1939 to 1946. Prior to that, Joseph Whitely, an uncle of the present 'treas­ urer was township treasurer from 1895 to 1929 -and another uncle, J. B. Whitely was Medi­ cal Officer of Health from 1887 to 1936. Ben’s grandfather, Joseph Whitely was deputy reeve from 1877 to 1882, again in 1887 and was a councillor in 1875 and 3876. . Clerk Thompson The Thompsons are the youngest family - represented in township affairs at the present- time; the present clerk’s grand;, father only came to Goderich Township in 1864. , Robin E. Thompson, the pre­ sent clerk, was appointed to the position in 1948 on the death of his father, R. G, Thompson, who had held the sarnie post since 1923, R, G. was -township tax collector from 1912 to 1923 and served as secretary of the town­ ship Board of Health for 25 years. Tebbutt was ap­ pointed assessor in 1950 and his grandfather, Wallgate Tebbutt was listed as a pathmaster in 1855 afer coming to the town­ ship in 1841. With a record such as the . above township officials have and with former members of their families serving the muni­ cipality, the present council feels' they have a unique rebord. They are quite sincere in issu­ ing a challenge to any othei’ municipality to match it. The children of Mi', and Mrs, Gordon Cuninghame visited- with them over the weekend; it was the occasion of Mrs. Cun- inghame’s birthday.
