Build Your Happy
Marriage With Some
Good Cookbooks
Few brides are lucky enough to be good cooks
when they marry. Some are, though, and the
reason is primarily, practice,
Practice is the key word to successful cook-
ing, the kind of cooking that won't make new
hubby run screaming to his mother (who you
know, cooks everything better than anyone
else ih the world) with stories about burned
cookies, toast and fingers.
Arm yourself with a few good cookbooks. If
you are a beginning cook, don't attempt to
use the Cordon Bleu cookbook right off the
reel.
IT IS, however, interesting to remember that
cooking is a little like knitting, one can get
very tired of knit and pearl rows on a scarf,
just as never trying anything adventurous in
cooking can be boring.
If the new cook-bride remembers that recipes
which use lots of fluffy egg whites and cheeses
and wine and "clarified butter" may be tricky
and not something to experiment with, on
new hubby's palate.
Soups really hit the spot and are generally
very simple to make — besides being very
inexpensive to make. A soup like the Hungarian
delicacy, goulash, can make a meal out of an
otherwise dull-sounding one-pot dish.
A VERY inexpensive cut of meat, beef flank
steak, pounded and rolled up with bread stuff-
ing with onions inside makes a spectacular
baked-in-the-oven dish which is the stick-to-
the-ribs type meal men love.
There are numerous stories about young
brides who labor for hours over foods like
chicken croquettes and pineapple upside down
cake only to find out six years later that their
husband hated those fc-ods all along.
Ask your husband the nd of foods he likes,
don't take it for granted that because you
happen to love anchovies on your pizza that
he will. Even if he's eaten thei, with a straight
face during your courtship, he may wince
at them when he isn't being forced to eat them
to make you happy as in courting times.
And remember, a little whipped cream goes a
long, long way ... especially by candlelight.
