Agricultural tidbits
with Adrian Vos
With the higher food cost and the often painful realization
that food comes before the snowmobile, farmers are getting a
bit more attention from our, up till recently, mainly ur-
ban oriented governments. It shows in one region where
before, the concern was mainly expressed by farmers them-
selves and their organizations. I am talking about land use.
The two main farm organizations, commodity groups, the
crop and soil association and others have urged all levels of
government to preserve prime farmland. For the sake of a
few bucks, (it's cheaper to build on level farmland than on
rocky and hilly land,) the average for our food production
has been made smaller year after year.
After higher food prices, caused by threatened food shor-
tages, suddenly the urban dweller, as represented by our
governments, is reminded that food production has to come
from the land. Whelan has said so, as has Steward. Now
they are joined by such as Norman Pearson, a political
science professor and David Estrin of the Canadian En-
vironmental Law Association, by Ron Basford, Canadian
minister of urban affairs and others. Maybe we will get some
action to protect the farm and farmer from shortsighted
greed.

It is possible to grow food without soil. I would hate to
pay the cost for a hundred acres of corn though. However,
Tom and Bill Loosley of Alberta grow tomatoes without soil.
It is called "Hydroponics" and the soil is replaced by
nutrient rich water in a gravel bed. This way they grow
240,000 lbs per acre. In Arizona they grow strawberries,
chard, cucumbers :.tid melons with this method.
* *
This spread between what the farmers receives and what
we have to pay to the retailer is growing. USDA reports that
the price difference on beef was 39c per pound in July. In Oc-
tober it had risen to 53c per pound. For pork the spread rose
from 25c to 44c. One wonders who gets the extra profit.

Well folks, this is the last you'll hear from me in this year.
I wish each and every one of you a happy and prosperous
New Year, so you can pay us a decent price for our labors
* and still have plenty left over for recreation.

games last week, both by close
scores.

(Dec. 19th) at Seaforth they
won 7-5.
Clinton jumped into a 3-0
lead in the first period, but

by Graham and Feeney gave

Other Clinton goals went to
Flynn, Cook (2) Gibbings and
Graham.
In an exhibition game with
Wingham on Saturday (Dec.
22nd) Clinton was on the short
end of a 5.2 score at the end of
the second period. However
they scored four times in nine
minutes of the third and then
held on to win 6-5.

Colquhoun, Cantelon, Cook,
Thompson, Graham, Irwin.
Three were solo efforts with
assists on the others going to
