Miss Robbins was reading a
hristmas story to her class.
billy laughed, "Everybody
knows there's no Santa
Claus." "I'll show you," said
INilersina, the little witch. And
v, hen she tapped Billy on the
shoulder, they were suddenly
up at the North Pole, There
vas Santa's Workshop. But
everything was quiet, and
Santa was sitting outside with
his head in his hands. The
elves had gone off to get a
Christmas tree of their own.
By the time they got back, it
v ould be too late to make toys
for all the children. Mersina
borrowed Billy's pocket knife
and cut a splinter of wood
from the wall. She planted it
in the snow and said some'
magic words. It grew and
grew..,into a big, beautiful
,,Christmas tree. Mersina sent
a toy bird flapping off to call
the elves back. "We have to
trim the tree," they said.
Mersina picked up a handful
Christmas Assembly
On Wednesday, December 12,
the grade three class presented
an assembly using Christmas as
a theme. Numbers included "A
Christmas Alphabet" and "The
Little Christmas Tree".
They did a dance called
"Jingle Bells" and sang "Nut-

"The C-H-R-I-S-T-M-A-S
song". The last number was
called "Tree in The Park". "Oh
Canada" was then sung by the
whole school to close the
assembly,
of snow and threw it at the
tree, Now the tree was
covered with sparkling balls
and tinsel. The elves went
happily back to work, and
Santa asked Mersina what
she'd like him to bring her.
She just smiled at him. Then
Mersina and Billy whisked
back to their class, and Billy
told everyone, "There really
is ti" Santa Claus! I just saw
him!"

Parente and school trustees
will be given free access to
schools under the new Con;
solidated Education Act which
was given first reading in the
Legislature last week.
Under the new Act, parents
and school trustees are
designated as school visitors
and will be able to visit a
school at any time. The
designation was previously
-limited to clergyman and mem-
bers of the Legislature,
A parent will be able to visit
a school at which their child is
enrolled. School trustees may
freely visit any school within
the board he represents.
In presenting the new Act,
Education Minister Thomas
Wells said that the con-
solidation is more a refinement
of the five acts; The Ministry of
Education Act, The Schools
Administration Act, The Public
Schools Act, the Separate
Schools Act and the Secondary
School and Boards of
Education Act rather than an
introduction of major policy
changes.

biguities and obsolete referen-

CALLING HOME
FOR CHRISTMAS?
While our business office will be closed
over the holidays (see below) many of our
Operators will be at work to help you get in
touch with family or friends. They've asked
me to pass on a couple of tips that will make
it easier for you to get your call through.
First, remember that Christmas Day and
New Year's Day seem to be everybody's
favourite time to call. Circuits are extremely
busy. If you place your call a day before or
after, you'll have much less difficulty.
Secondly, if you don't know the telephone
number of the place you want to call, why
not get it now. It's free. For overseas
numbers, dial "0" and ask for the overseas
operator. She'll take the details and call
you back.
- On calls within the continent, you can
probably dial Directory Assistance your-
self. Just dial the access code "1", the area
code for the place you're calling (if different
than your own) then 555-1212. You'll have
it in no time.
BUSINESS OFFICE HOURS
During the holiday period, the business
office will be closed on December 24th,
25th and 26th. We'll re-open on the 27th
and 28th. The following week we'll close
only on January 1st.
May we take this opportunity to extend
warmest greetings to all of you from all of
us here at Bell Canada.

Mr, Wells said that the Con-
stitutional position and special
identity of the Roman Catholic
. Separate Schools has been
retained in the consolidation.
The Act requires that to be
eligible "for election as a
separate school trustee a per-
son must be a resident of the
board for which he is running
and be a separate school elec-
tor.
Mr. Wells said that between
now and the next session of the
Legislature the Ministry will
welcome comments and
suggestions about the new act.
They will be given con-
sideration before the Bill is
reintroduced at the next sitting
of the Legislature. Mr. Wells
said that the act will also be
given thorough study by the
Legislature's Standing Com-
mittee on Social Development.
