I3ack from a two week
holiday in Tobago are Mr. and
Mrs. Harry Ball of Raglan
Street, Mr, Ball tells us that
weather and scenery-wise this
island resort has much to offer.
Daytime temperatures
averaged 85 degrees while the
nights dropped to around 75.
Mr. and Mrs. Ball went
snorkeling on Bucco Reef, en-
joyed drives along the narrow
winding roads of the island
where cars still drive on the left
side. Nearing the height of the
tourist season, they found
many of their fellow holidayers
were Canadians along with
Amercians and a goodly num-
ber of Scandinavians.

At the "Holiday Home",
guests of Mr, and Mrs. C. Van
Damme last week were the
Clinton Senior Citizens Club
who had their first part in the
form of a pot luck supper.
Gifts were exchanged and
printed membership cards were
distributed as a present from
the vice-president, Mr. N.
Truesdell. There was also an
auction sale on some small
quilts.
The Ontario Street United
Church Choir entertained for
one hour, singing beautiful
selections with Mrs. E. Radford
and Mrs. E. Wiltse at the
piano. Miss Jane Symons ac-
companied on her trumpet.
A game of euchre followed.
Winners were: lone hands Mrs.
Viola Lampman; ladies' high
Mrs. Harvey Johnston; men's
high Mr. Ceriel Van Damme;
ladies' low, Miss Sadie Whit-
tington; men's low Mr. Roy
Connell.

There doesn't appear to be
any titled of the well-worn ad-

food into four basic groups:
milk and milk products; fruit,

pastas. Examples of one ser-
ving from the meat and alter-
nates group are: four
tablespoons of peanut butter;.3

poultry; 2 eggs or 1 cup of
baked beans. For children un-
der 10 years (and persons over

this group will supply their
daily protein needs. Older
children and adults require 2
servings a day.

sparrows and starlings but has
yet to graduate to the ranks of
those who are able to host the
cardinals and chickadees. Such
bird talk brings to mind the
rather appealing poem by Fran-
ces Frost:
TREE OF BIRDS
They must have suddenly
remembered
in that blizzard-blown
December,
when food was scarce and
singing hard,
the mountain-ash in our
silver yard.
That Day-before Christmas
afternoon
when the snowstorm stopped
and dusk came soon,
they flew into our snowy tree
with wild and happy min-
strelsy.
Each chickadee, blackcaPped
and merry,
feasted on cool and scarlet
berries,
and till the early .stars grew
strong
gave us a Christmas tree of
song. * * *
And while the typewriter is
galvanized into action here are
a few "Hot Cross Puns"
gleaned off a last year's Christ-
mas card (full credit to Carlton
Cards).
Cross a reindeer with an
elephant and know what you'll
get? I don't either, but you'd
better keep it off your roof this
Christmas!
Cross Santa's sleigh with a
Christmas sock...and all you'll
get is a stocking with a couple
of runners.
Cross a bad case of laryngitis
with a suit of armour...and
you'll have a silent knight.
Cross a peppermint stick
with an elevator...and you can
raise a little cane this Christ-
mas.
Cross a partridge with a
bell...and you'll have a real
Christmas wing-ding.
Sorry for all the above - hope
you will be back to read the
column next week as usual,

Revenue Mininster Allan
Grossman said today that the
Ontario government is
developing a continuing policy
to protect home improvements
from property taxes.
Mr. Grossman told a tax con-
ference in Toronto that, as an
interim move, the government
will extend the existing tax
moratorium on home im-
provements, due to expire at
the end of next year, until 1977,
Under existing legislation, in-
troduced in June, 1971, a home
improvement is not assessed,
and is, therefore, not taxed,
unless it adds more than $2,500
to the market value of the
property.
Mr. Grossman said he
believes an increase in the
exemption level is necessary
"particularly in view of the
sharp rise in property values
"dbring the past few years." ."Two key questions we must
re'Solve are: What should be the
level of exemption? And for
how long should it apply?" He
said.
Mr. Grossman noted that a
planning consultant who
examined the question of
property maintenance on behalf
of the government, suggested a
$5,000 market value
assessment exemption for home
improvements over a five-year
period. That time period would
be roughly equivalent to the
financing period if a property
owner borrowed the money to
make major property changes.

"Whether this approach is
the most appropriate will be
more clearly apparent when all
properties are assessed at
market value in 1976," Mr.
Grossman continued.
He said that the government
must also examine whether the
tax benefits for completed im-
provements or renovations
should be non-transferable on
sale of the property. "In other
words, the tax incentive would
go to the person who makes the
property improvements while
he owns the property and not
be locked into the assessment-
taxation system."
The Minister commented
that it is widely believed by
homeowners that if they im-
prove their properties, their
assessments, and, therefore,
their property taxes, will
automatically go up. -
"This is an exaggerated and
generally erroneous reaction,
but• we recognize that if people
believe they will be penalized,
they will be more reluctant to
undertake property im-
provements."
He added that many home
improvements do not, in fact,
raise the market value of the
property by as much as the
original cost of the im-
provement. "We have found
that it is possible for a
homeowner to spend as much
as $4,000 on his property before
the market value appreciates
by $2,500," (The present exem-
ption level.)
