Following last year's suc-
cessful experiment at de-
centralizing its Christmas
assistance program to families
and children. in co-ordination
with other local community
groups and volunteers, the
Children's Aid Society will
again be undertaking sponsor-
ship of a volunteer bureau in
each of the five towns in Huron
County,
"The spontaneous support
and active assistance of so
many groups and volunteers
convinced us that keeping such
a programme at a local level
was far, better than attempting
to direct a large effort of
assistance to upwards of two
hundred families through our
office in Goderich," noted
Bruce R. Heath, Children's Aid
Society County Director.
"Meeting the needs of the
children and families referred
to us is directly dependent on
the response of the people of
Huron County. Already `we
have received financial
donations, gifts and committ-
ments of assistance from many
community, church groups, and
generous individuals. Others
have undertaken to sponsor a
family as a group project and
this we highly endorse."
"In many communities,
church and service groups have
always taken it upon them-
selves to engage in Christmas
projects similiar to our own.
Where such activities are
already in existence, these
same groups would again be
responsible for people known to
them or referred to them. In
such cases, we would act only
as a clearing house, or possibly
share in the local project as ap-
propriate. In setting up a
Christmas Bureau, it has been
our desire to make the best
possible use of the voluntary
dollar and donation,"
"Any authorized represen-
tative of a church or com-
munity group may check our
referral index at our office in
Goderich, or iwithithet
indinator. reamili'es
needing assistance can contact
us directly or be referred by any
community group or interested
individual."
"We are particularly desirous
of assistance with toys and
games, and articles of clothing
such as mitts, scarfs, and caps
for all age groups, Both new
toys, and used articles in good
condition, are presently needed,
along with appropriate gifts for
the teenager," Last year, many
people out doing their own
Christmas shopping made it a
point to purchase one extra gift
for a child, or a game which
could be used by a family
group, and donated these to the
Society, It is our hope that
many people who are not af-
filiated with various core,
munity service groups, will con-
sider those less fortunate than
themselves and take it as a per-
sonal responsibility or
charitable gesture to help in
some small way.
Donations of gifts or good
used clothing will be received
at the local bureau headquar-
ters, Clinton Town Hall, 23
Albert St., Clinton after
December 3.
"We would appreciate most
gifts and clothing donations in,
by December 17 if at all
possible," requested Heath, "as
distribution will commence In
the week prior to Christmas. I
would ask also that no
perishable foods be donated as
we have no facilities for storing
such items, and in some areas
provision of dinner is handled
by purchase voucher in lieu of
the traditional hamper, and
others have special diet needs
which necessitate individual
purchases by the recipient."
Those donating money are
asked to forward same by
cheque or money order to the
Society office in Goderich, for
which income tax receipts will
be issued.
Local Co-ordinator' is Mrs.
M.F. Corrie who may be
reached at 482-7758.

Ministry of Education has
reduced regional offices
Dryden area, Mr. Maki was ap-
pointed assistant director of the
Ministry's Thunder Bay
regional office. He was tran-
sferred to Toronto in 1969,
joining the Minstry's super-
visory services branch and then
moved to the school business
and finance branch. Mr. Maki,
a native of Thunder Bay,
taught and was principal of
schools in Thunder Bay. He is
a member of the Canadian and
American Associations of
School Administrators.
The Ministry's other regional
offices are located in Thunder
Bay, Sudbury, North Bay, Lon-
don, Waterloo, St. Catharines,
Kingston and Ottawa,
The Ministry of Education
has reduced the number of its
regional offices by one, and will
re-structure all of them next
year, Education Minister
Thomas Wells told the
Legislature last week.
In presenting the Ministry's
spending estimates, Mr. Wells
said that the Ministry's two
Toronto-based regional offices
will be amalgamated on
January 1. The move will
reduce the number of regional
offices from 10 to nine.
The combined regional office
will be based in existing
facilities in Willowdale and
will continue to serve school
boards in Metropolitan
Toronto and the counties of
Haliburton, Victoira, York
(north of Metro), Ontario, Sim-
coe, Dufferin, Peel and Halton.
Mr, Wells said that as a
result of the amalgamation the
office will be able to provide a
more coordinated and effective
service to the boards in the
eight-county region.
Next year the nine regional
offices will be restructured so
that each will contain
curriculum, supervisory and
financial* compon‘ents capable

Mr. Wells announced the ap-
pointment of Lauri Maki, 43, of
Agincourt, as the Director of
the combined Toronto area
regional offices.
