PUDICLEY
Geraniums have long been
popular garden flowers in
Canada. They are rioted pare
titularly for their brilliant
showy flowers: The most com-
mon types are known as zonal
geraniums which have flowers
ranging in coIor^:from white to
'pink and salmon and through
all the brilliance of the reds,
They are not truly geraniums
as this 'name properly belongs
- to perennial border and rock
garden geraniums. They are
one group within a very Jorge
genus, the pelargonium.
Another fascinating group of
pelargoniums, not as well-
known as the zone's, is the
scentedsleaved group. These
have been known and
cultivated ever since they were
introduced to England from.
South Africa centuries ago.
Today, scented-leaved
geraniums are increasing in
popularity in our country and
are the favorite of 'many hob-
byists and collectors.
Scented geraniums carry
rather impressive credentials
and are valued from many
points of view. To begin with,
they are used in gardens
because of their ornamental
qualitities. Most have some
flower appeal although not as
good as the zonal geraniums.
The foliage is interesting,
however, by virtue of its variety,
in texture, size and shape.
Their ability to produce scen-
ted leaves provides an element
that invites curiosity. It is quite
a discovery when one first rubs
the leaf of a scented geranium
and experiences its pungent
fragrance. This stimulation of
another of the senses invites
conversation, for the definition
of the fragrance is often a mat-
ter of controversy. What seems
like rose fragrance to one may
be quite spicy to another. If one
were not prejudiced in advance
by labels indicating `nutmeg
geranium', it would be in-
teresting to see just how the
aroma might be classified.
There is a social quality in
scented geraniums, for they are
easily prbpagated by cuttings
and the resulting plants may be
shared with friends and fellow
.enthusiasts. This.oftenleacts to
trading and giving of remem-
brances. Often plants are han-
ded down from generation to
generation within the family,
creating a sentimental or in-
trinsic value for the plants.
Scented-leaved geraniums
are also of economic impor-
tance. Great fields of
"Pelargonium capitatum" are
planted in France, Algeria,
Spain and Sicily, as a source of
oil for perfumes, The essence
derived is called 'Rose
Geranium' or `Geranium' and
has been extensively developed
by the French perfume in-
dustry.
Still another aspect of these
plants is their culinary quality.
A leaf of the rose variety in the
base of a jar of homemade ap-
ple jelly renders it something
extra special. The variety
Lemon Crispum is known also
as the Finger Bowl geranium,
as leaves from the plant are of-
ten placed in finger bowls.
Recipes are to be found for
using the leaves of scented
geraniums in cake mixes, as
garnishes for cold drinks, or for
making potpourries.
Over 70 kinds of scented
geraniums are available in
Canada and the United States
if you search diligently for
them. Among the fragrances
reported are rose, lemon,
orange, citron, nutmeg, lemon
balm, peppermint, mint, spice,
apple, eucalyptus, citronella,
camphor limo, coconut,
almond, pepper, apricot,
strawberry, filbert, ginger, cin-
namon, lavender and perhaps a
'miscellaneous category to in-
elude whatever strikes your
fancy,
Scented-leaved geraniums
ore relatively easy to grow,
The Stratford Festival's 1974
Season will open with a revival
of this year's "Pericles", to be
followed by Moliere's "The
Imaginary Invalid," "Love's
Labour's Lost" and "King
John", Artistic Director Jean
Gascon announced recently.
Pericles will again be direc-
ted by Jean Gascon with design
by Leslie Hurry and music by
Gabriel Charpentier. One of the
highlights of the 1973 Season,
"Pericles" was the "short-run"
presentation at the Festival
Theatre, opening mid-July and
playing through the first week
of September.
The Moliere comedy, an-
nounced previously as Strat-
ford's Tour production of 1974,
will be restaged for presen-
tatitIn oh the thrust .stage of the
Festival Theatre following
seven weeks of performances in
Australia, As announced, the
play will be directed by Jean
Gascon, with William Hutt
starring as the "Invalid" of the
title. Design will be by Tanya
Moiseiwitsch, whose many out-
standing productions for Strat-
ford include the 1970 "Cym-
beline", following which she
returned to England as Con-
sultant Designer to the New
Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.
This past year, she has
designed John Dexter's produc-
tion of "The Misanthrope" for
the National Theatre of Great
Britain and Gogol's "The
Government Inspector" for the
Guthrie Theatre in Min-
neapolis, along with several
productions at the Crucible
Theatre.
"Love's Labour's Lost", the
third opening of the '74 season,
will be directed by Michael
Bawtree, an Associate Director
of the Stratford \Festival, who
staged the widely-praised "She

Stoops to Conquer" in 1972 and
1973 and "Exiles" at the Third
Stage this past August. A
favourite with audiences
through the centuries, the play
combines exuberant comedy
and some of Shakespeare's
most beautiful poetry in its
light-hearted satirizing of
bookishness and pedantry.
"King John" will be the final
offering at the Festival
Theatre, opening mid-July. The
play will mark the directorial
debut in Stratford of the
celebrated Peter Dews, for-
merly Artistic Director of the -
Birmingham Repertory
Theatre. Mr. Dews has
distinguished himself with
many memorable, long-running
plays in the West End and on
Broadway, as well +as- with
productions for Chichester and
Edinburgh and for the leading
repertory theatres of England.'
Among his more recent produc-
tions are "Crown
Matrimonial", now going into
its second year at the Theatre
Royal, Haymarket, Anouilh's
"The Director of the Opera"
for this year's Chichester
Festival and "As You Like It"
for the National Arts Council
'in Durban, South Africa. He
also directed the New York
production of "Crown
Matrimonial", which opened
this month at the Helen Hayes
Theatre. Among Mr. Dews'
other New York credits are
such successful works as
"Vivat! Vivat Regina!" and
"Hadrian VII," for which he
won the Antoinette Perry
Award as best director in 1969.
He had earlier directed the
much-acclaimed English
productions of both plays.
Casting for the four plays
will be announced at a later
date.
