The city of some 14,000 is located at the south eastern corner of that level, fertile area known as the Peace River coun- try. The land is level with few trees. The soil is productive and deep. Crops compared quite favourably with those areas of the prairies that had above average crops this year., They do have problems with heavy rainfall and early frosts on occasion but their days are much longer in summer and growth is very rapid. There was rain about the middle of seeding and we saw some fields of oats and barley about six in- ches high on July 15th yet this grain was pretty well. all swathed when that early snow we heard about arrived near the end of August and was giving a satisfactory yield. Throughout the area where we traveled, cattle were quite numerous and mixed farming seemed to be popular though cash cropping of wheat and rapeseed is quite important. N.V,e_fau,nd, pretty well established in their apartment even though they had arrived there from their "honeymoon" only some 24 hours before we did. We were somewhat surprised to find the towns and cities in this north country quite modern, much roomier and pollution didn't seem to be any problem. After a visit of three days, which concluded with Ross giving us an airplane ride over the city, just to prove that he really did have his pilotk license, we headed toward home. However, it was quite a thrilling experience and my first time up in a small plane. We passed through Edmon- ton to call on friends in Fort Saskatchewan and camped over night at Elk Island Provincial Park, which is also a Buffalo reserve. As usual, when we stay at parks we got to bed early and got an early start in the morning. On the way out we came upon a herd of 50 or so buffalo of all sizes along the roadside. We didn't appreciate the way some of the old boys eyed us but we got by safely and thought we got some good close-ups but found that it was too early in the morning. We got to Battleford by noon and toured the early R.C.M.P. fort there, then on to Saskatoon to spend the night with David and family. The next day we slept late and in the afternoon visited the museum where we FORBES: We would like to thank relatives and friends for gifts, cards and good wishes that made our 25th wedding anniversary an occasion to remember. In the evening we went out to "Black- Strap" mountain, that famous man-made mountain built for the Olympic ski jumps. There is a large lake and well appointed picnic grounds where we "ate- out". Next morning, we "hit the road" again visited Gardine Dam - which holds back the waters of Diefenbaker Lake. It provides a generous supply of. electrical power as well as providing water for irrigation of some 40 thousand acres with considerable expansion for the future. We arrived at Souris that evening to spend the night with Don and family. The next mor- ning, Don and I went south to Minot to the State Fair where he pursued his hobby as a rab- bit fancier by getting two of his rabbits certified for registration and bought a couple of new ones. The ladies enjoyed a leisurely day at the swimming pool and a visit to an agate pit. In the evening Don andi bad a game of golf which went much better but I'm not quite ready to join the pro-circuit yet. On leaving Souris, we went south to the International Peace Gardens - a project of the Federated Women's Institutes, I believe. My wife who is the horticulture enthusiast in the family was disappointed in the flower beds. Apparently they have gone to shrubs and have reduced their flower planting greatly. We returned home through the northern states by way of Superior, Mackinac and Port Huron, Crops south of the bor- der were generally better thark on the prairies but showed some shortage of rain. In southern Michigan where com- bining was in progress I was . told that yields were not as good as crop appeared as the grain was small due to the dry hot weather. A factor that has apparently affected the produc- tion of grain throughout the whole area through which we passed is the great increase in the production of hay. This of course happened because of the lack of market for grain in years past and accounts for the build-up of cattle, If the far- mers go back to grain growing, as they are being urged to do, what happens to our beef sup- ply? We arrived back in good old Ontario and. the crops im- proved all the way home and were much the best of any we saw the steam engine which „saw on our travels. pulled some 20 ploughs in the kt=ii<=1K===H14=31+I:=11<===t-P=11 SUPER $ALE yt AUCTION HULLY GULLY FALCONER: I would like to thank everyone for the visits, the flowers and gifts I received while in Clinton Hospital, also Dr, Baker and the nurses on the first floor, Luella Falconer,--42b BRUNSDON: I would like 'to thank my friends and neighbours for their many acts of kindness, cards, flowers and visits while a patient in Clinton Hospital, Special thanks to those who looked after my home, also to Dr. Harrett, Rev.
