These are only a few reasons why a change should not be made, and with a little thought the list could go on indefinitely, A positive ap- proach to change can be taken just as easily as a negative one. If we are not in agreement with a proposed change, let us not use the negative comments mentioned above, let us THINK POSITIVE. In the words of Walter P, Reuther, "You advocate what you The following is the Valedictory address given recently by Heather McAdam of Clinton at the com- mencement exercises at Central Huron Secondary School. It is reprinted here because of its in- spirational qualities. BY HEATHER MCADAM The time has come when all of us must decide what we are going to do in life, for life, and for our being. Some have gone on to university, many to colleges, while others have found jobs within the surrounding area. But whether you are u two year, four year or five year graduate, you will always look back on your basic schooling, from public school through high' school. We now again have reached the top only to start again at the bottom of a new society. Will we be able to do it? Can we stand up to society's pressures in all its forms? Can we now lead a suc- cessful happy life? We ask our- selves these questions. I believe we all can because as you glance back at - your school years. you will remember the good times; the dan- ces, the parties, and the great feeling as each person is no longer a peer, but an interesting in- dividual a part of a large group, The bad times such as things like pressures of exams prepared us for the future and the lost, hopeless feeling as you strive for your own identity, but the most important thing I hope you will remember is that you have gained the concept of self. High school is the time when your own values and standards are set and you either live up to them or fall beneath them. When you realize that people are individuals as you are; their opinions and emotions now count too. It is a time when you search yourself for what you want to do, when teachers become friends and guidance or advice becomes accep- ted. Friends, activities, and above all, society, influence us, But it is up to you as individuals to stand as your self. Isn't it strange that princes and kings, And clowns that caper in sawdust rings, And common folk like you and me Are Builders for Eternity? To each is given a bag of tools, A shapeless mass, and a book of rules, And each must make, ere life has flown A stumbling block, or a stepping stone. As life continues we will floun- der from stepping stone to stone and mindfully appreciate as we glance back thb wonderful teachers who have bearcsit6Mog„stones for us to higher things:. MrPlan Fraser, Mrs. Doris McKibbon who many of us will never forget, Miss Ann Chislet, Mr. George Cull, Mr. Gor- don Smith and the list goes on as each teacher leaves an imprint with us all. Another aspect many have thought of is leaving home. Homo never seems really appreciated until departure is necessary, I think a good illustration of this is when Hernia from the book "The Class of '44" mulls over this phenomena in his mind as he leaves his room to begin his first year at college. "It was a funny thing about going to college. Once you left for school that was it, yoU no longer lived at home. Home wasn't really your home any more. You could come for visits. Your mother was still your mother. But the house you'd lived in all those years wasn't ever going to he home again in the same way. First 'college, then a job, or marriage, probably. But that room that had seen so many trimphs and failures, fantasies and real life dramas, private moments and dreams, victories and defeats, tears and joys, frustrations, and exhilarations, was really like an extended womb that had outlived its usefulness. He didn't think his mother really appreciated this, or she'd have been in there weeping all over the place. Or maybe she did and that's why she wasn't, because mothers learned to accept that things changed as children grew up and went away. His room had bean a very private place, but it wasn't really his any more, He'd heard that some mothers even ren- ted rooms out to boarders when sons went off to college. Hermie didn't think he'd like that, But he couldn't really claim it only the memories belonged to him," How much easier it would have been for Hermie to unpack, and get a job, and live at home. But that would have been the safe thing to do - there was rio risk to that. Yearning inside of him was that call to adventure, the lure of the far horizon, the need to move on to meet the next challenge - reluc- tant though he was, to actually make that move. So it is a part of growing up, strengthing yourself for the future and conquering the ad- justments. Here I want to say thanks to the strongest stepping stones, our parents, thanks mom and thanks dad. To me, another important fact of life is not to sit idly by, and let others haul the bowl. Be prepared now to give your time and energy, to live life not merely exist as a parasite sapping items to inability. Learn, act, listen and speak your ideas to fulfill your lifestyle as well as others, Many of us have a tendency to resist and fear change in our daily working environment and we sometimes try to substantiate our beliefs with negative phrases Such as: "It is not in the budget", "It will not work in our departnient" - ""We tried that before." - "Why change?" - works alright," believe in. and I. shall advocate what I believe in. If I can not take your argument apart and show you, that my point of view is superior,. based upon the facts, then I, ought to lose the argument and you ought to win; the same thing is true in reverse." Ono point we should all bear in mind is that there is never a best way, only a better way. Active par- ticipation in any-proposed change will help the better way to surface, In closing, one last thought crosses my mind. Call no man great simply because he holds an office. Greatness! it is something more than office, something more than fame, more than genius! It is the great heartedness that encloses those in need, reaches down to those below and lifts them up. Hence many in the humbler walks of life are more great than many who occupy great place, To be great-remember; don't just boar but listen don't look but observe don't feel without touching don't .taste .without savouring don't speak without soying don't act without, meaning and above all don't exist without living. Life is a great game, let us play well, lot us play fair. It's not for the sake of a ribboned coat, Or the selfish hope of a season's fame, But the captain's hand on his shoulder smote, Play up! Play up, and play the game. This the word that year by year While in her place the school is set, Everyone of her sons must hear, And none that hears it dare forget; This they all with a joyful mind Rear through life like a torch in flame And falling, fling to the hosts behind; Play up! Play up, and play the game, LET US MAKE YOUR OLD FURNITURE BETTER THAN NEW! For. a free estimate and a look it our newest samples of ..materiat CALL CLARK UPHOLSTERY Phone 523-4272 R. Cook, Prop.
