The three day conference was split into four segments dealing with Ontario and the energy crisis, urban development and the environment and environ- mental, action, Two of the keynote speakers were James Auld, minister of the environ- ment and Darcy McKeough, minister of energy. Represen- ting our area were Joanne Palmer, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Don Palmer, Victoria Street, Peter Walden, son of Dr. and Mrs. Paul Walden, Joseph Street and Bruce Williams, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ken Williams, RR 4, Clinton. * * * BINGO! Can't you just hear it? Last week the Clinton Legion had a winner for its $200 jackpot - Mrs. Stewart Freeman. Congratulations! * * * Canon Paull, holidaying in Bayfield for the summer, of- ficiated at the baptism of Kristy Lynn Goodyear, daughter of Cpl. and Mrs. E. Goodyear of Goose Bay, Labrador. The baptism was• held at 1 p,m. August 19, 1973 in St, Paul's Anglican Church. In attendance were Mr. and Mrs. Royce Fremlin, the grand- parents and Mr. and Mrs. Den- nie Penfound and family, * * * Professor Edna Turner of New York City is visiting r; relatives here in her home town before leaving on a trip to Australia and New Zealand, * * * A coffee break can be a ho- 'hum everyday ritual or sometimes it can lead to an item of interest for Town Talk. While on holidays recently, the writer and her husband drop- ped in at Milt and Mabel's for a coffee. While there, Mrs, Mabel Schreiber told of a chance meeting near her sum- mer cottage with a lady who enquired after her whereabouts. When Mrs. Schrieber spoke of living in Clinton, the lady introduced herself as Miss Rorie Ellis of Listowel and told of having taught English and art at the high school in Clinton when Mr. Treleaven was the prin- cipal. She remembered having in her classes among others, Messrs. Fred Elliott, Douglas Ball, and Bill Mutch. Mrs. Schreiber observed that Miss Ellis was keen and active and that her interest in art still con- tinues for she had with her a sketch book and was recreating a scene along the Lake .Huron shoreline. Mr, Elliott upon being questioned as to his recollec- tion regarding the above, was most interesting and infor- mative and produced two of the school pictures in which the gentlemen above were easily identifiable. Even the ravages of time have not eradicated the handsome features of these teenagers of yesteryear!! * * And for our modern teenagers who are this week returning to high school (or starting therein) - do not ap- proach it with that air of mor- bid resignation, rather remem- ber the couplet - author unknown - Twixt optimist and pessimist the difference is droll; The optimist sees the doughnut, the pessimist the hole. Work is nearly completed on the $100,000 improvement program undertaken this sum- mer by the Tuckersmith Municipal .Telephone system. The latest program sees the Plans have been completed for the 46th Annual Huron Plowmen's Association plowing match. The match this year is being held at the Howard Datars. farm, 1 mile north of Dash- wood on Saturday, September 15. The preceding day, starting' at noon on Friday, September 14 a coaching class will be held, when expert plowmen will demonstrate the proper setting of plows and coach the plow boys and girls on the art of match plowing, The plowing match will get underway at 9:30 Saturday morning Septem- ber 15. A horse shoe pitching contest is another feature of the match on Saturday afternoon with two classes - one for Huron players only, and one for all comers. A Queen of the Furrow contest - another popular installation of nearly 90 miles of new buried cable that will replace existing overhead wire and expand the capabilities of the present system, Mel Graham of Brucefield, feature of the match will be held when the 1973 Huron Queen of the Furrow will be chosen. The Huron Queen will be eligible to compete in the Ontario Queen of the Furrow contest at the International Plowing Match in Lambton County, September 25 to 29. Plowing Match set Tuckersmith Telephone Co. completes expansion said the recent construction program would mean about 95 per cent of the telephone system's lines are now buried with 100 per cent of the rural lines underground. Buried cable partially eliminates the costly maintenance associated with overhead wires, par- ticularly during winter ice storms. The Tuckersmith System ser- ves customers in five townships in two counties, including Stanley, Hibbert, Usborne, Tuckersmith, and the village of Bayfield. The new expansion plan will also reduce the number of par- ties on one line to a maximum of four and Mr. Graham said that the system "could now of- fer anybody a private line if they want to pay for it." At present, a subscriber on a four party line pays about $4.50 a month, while a two party line would cost about $10.95 depen- ding on the distance from the exchange. A private line would average about $17.50 a month. Mr. Graham said that star- ting in December, all sub- scribers would receive a separate monthly billing. Previously, customers were billed yearly on the municipal tax roll. Mr. Graham said the $100,000 project cost was recently debentured by Tucker- smith Township council and rates will be increased $1 for multi-party users to pay for the expansion. r i •,,y,..:;:,,;w.,•,,,,,,,,.::,, ' , ' ,--4.,,,,,,,,-" -.,:,-,:::$:,:.,,,,,.
