Dunline Limited of Huron
Industrial Park have recently
been awarded the order to
manufacture and install a Dun-
seal Hypalon Membrane Liner
for the town of Clinton sanitary
sewage system expansion.
The general contractors are
Maple Engineering and Con-
struction Co. Ltd., Brampton
and the consulting engineers
are RN, •Anderson Associates
Ltd., Toronto. The Plant is a
contact stabilization treatment
plant with a design capacity of
400,000 imperial gallons per
day utilizing a tertiary effluent
sand filtration system. The
design of the lagoons is based
on earth construction with the
Dunseal Hypalon Liner to
prevent seepage into the
ground water. Normally these
tanks would be constructed
from concrete, but the cost
would be substantially greater.
The liner has en indefinite
life and consequently will not
have to be replaced during the
life of the sewage treatment
plant. This is the first type of
design and built in Ontario.
This is the third Dunseal Mem,
If you are blessed with good
neighbors as we are blessed
with good neighbors you will
appreciate the line which this
column will follow this week.
My philosophy about neigh-
boring was developed 00 the
advice of my husband and long
years of experience. I've found
that neighbors should not
become too chummy, I've
discovered it is best not to have
an 'on-the.doorstep-all-the-
time' type relationship, It
wears thin very fast and often
leads to unnecessary problems.
For my money, good neigh-
boring consisting of coffee oc-
casionally, special favors•
sometimes and Christian con-
cern always. That's been my
way of doing things for a while
now, and I believe it to be the
best way.
So, this is the kind of neigh-
borly attitude that has passed
between our nextdoor neigh-
bors and us. And this week, it
was put to the test in one of the
most dramatic series of events
you're ever likely to see. If
neighbors can survive this, they
can survive anything.
It all began on a Saturday af-
ternoon - late- when my
husband discovered the sewers
were not acting property. We
were getting sewage water in
our basement and there .was
sewage water standing in the
yard. A plumber was sum-
moned and he promised to drop
by during the weekend to
checkout the situation and to
advise of the proper procedure,
By Sunday evening, it was
evident the sewer was blocked
and would have to be dug up to
find the problem.
Also on Sunday evening, our
youngest son dealt the first
blow on the neighbors.
"It was a beautiful hit," he
tried to explain. "It was the
first time this year I've really
hit the ball like that. It went
high and far right through
the neighbor's upstairs win-
dow."
My husband went im-
mediately to the neighbors to
offer to make restitution for the
damage. They were most un-
derstanding and there was no
real concern over this unfor-
tunate accident.
The next morning, the plum-
ber arrived with his work crew.
The digging began. Other than
brane to be supplied within the
Clinton region. Liners have
already been installed at Hearn
Industrial Wholesale at Clin-
ton and the B,P. bulk storage
plant in Clinton. Dunline
Limited developed the material
for lining ponds and lagoons
for pollution control. These
liners made at Centralia have
been supplied and installed all
across Canada.
In 1972 Dunline supplied
Dunseal liners for a 40 acre
project for a paper mill in
Newfoundland. Other liners
have been supplied and in-
stalled in a brine lagoon for
Canadian Rork Salt, Pugwash,
Nova Scotia; Settling ponds for
Kimberly Clark in Huntsville,
an emergency spill basin for
Imperial Oil Limited at
Resolute Bay, Northeast
Territories. Dunline have also
just completed a large order of
170,000 sq. ft. for a new iron
ore process plant near Wabugh,
Quebec.
Tom Goodwin, Dunline Com-
plex Manager, reports that he
is very pleased with the ef-
ficiency hi production by the
cutting off our newly installed
television cable, the job went
smoothly,—until the problem
was plain,
Our sewer pipe, which by the
way goes right through the
neighbor's basement about
eight inches off the floor, was
plugged at a trap within the
neighbor's basement, The trap
would have to be opened and
drained, we were told.
My nose began to crinkle as
it was explained that a large
hole would have to be chopped
in the neighbor's basement
floor and the sewage from the
trap dumped into it for pum-
ping outside.
The dastardly deed didn't
take long...,but the memories
lingered on and on and on.
Once the trap had been
cleared, things began to work
normally but it took my
husband and me several pails
of hot water with disinfectant
and a good deal of hosing and
mopping to return fragrant air
to that household.
But the problem had not en-
ded. This is now the third day
since the dumping operation
and the seal on the sewer pipe
which passes through our
neighbor's basement is still not
properly set. The neighbor's
floor is constantly wet - and
smelly. They can't use their
plumbing. We can't use our
plumbing. The plumber is
busy...and growing short-
tempered I suppose.
To make matters worse, our
neighbors are planning to leave
on vacation this
weekend....providing things
have dried up! In the mean-
time, the neighbor's wife can't
do her laundry in preparation
for the trip....and I'm going
honkers over the indonvenience
of it all.
The plumber is returning
today. With any luck at all, the
problem will be licked this mor-
ning. I've just spoken with my
neighbor and she tells me the
family's surviving nicely, our
friendship's still as solid as it
was last week and once they get
back from vacation we'll have
a night out together, just to
prove it. ,
As F.D. Roosevelt once said:-
In the field of world policy I
would dedicate this nation to
the policy of a good neighbor.
