SWE EP Program (Students

at the request of Harvey
MacDougall afrqrn, Bayfield,
cotriP Wed the .construction of
'100 Bluebird .houses,
Mr—MacDougall, a member
of The -Hayfield Area bluebird
Society, has a very keen in-
terest in preserVing Bluebirds.
He and other members of the
Society have been placing
Bltiebird houses throughout the
Stanley Township area with
the return of some Bluebirds.
Mr. MacDougall requested
that SWEEP construct more
Bluebird houses and place
them through the area south of
Bayfield and north of Exeter
with the hope that still more
bluebirds will return, Dan 4
Wilson, a SWEEP Technical "
Assistant, along with two
SWEEPERS, are going to
assist Mr. MacDougall in the
placement of these Bluebird
houses,
"11J is Projeet, was one of
SWEEP's rainy day projects
for the crews when they are
unable to work out-of-doors.
The SWEEP Program, spon-
sored by the Ministry of
Natural Resources, is in its
third summer.
A generation ago this
beautiful bird flourished
throughout Ontario, In many
parts of the province there isn't
a single pair of bluebirds
nesting any more, The passing
of the old rail fences, wooden
posts and orchard trees with
their woodpecker holes have
left few cavities for bluebirds to
nest. ia.; Starling's:: have, taken,
over most of them.
)3y putting up boxes such as
this (the We is too small for
starlings to enter) we may he
able to re-establish the
bluebirds. You can help by
patting up boxes. We can sup-
ply you with plans,
That box was built and put
up by members of the 1973
SWEEP Jeam as a conser-
vation project for the Auaable-
Hayfield watershed area.
The Bayfield Area Bluebird
Society has taken on the
responsibility for checking,
repairing and, if necessary,
moving this box, If the owner of
the post wants the box
removed, he should phone
either 565-2555 or 565.2848,
