We know that secretary Frank Cook will have a real good line-up of horses for this race. During the past week there have been two claims at the local ovals, On Wednesday • evening, Charles Mathers of R.R.2, Goderich haltered Cen- tennial Bob from Cecil Cran- don of St. Marys out of the tenth race, while on Sunday af- ternoon at Clinton W. G. Bradley, Goderich claimed Mudette ottt of the fourth race from Robert Taylor of Granton. Clinton Soccer Club finally put it all together and produced a long awaited vic- tory in London• and District Play on the weekend when they defeated Lender, Portuguese "B" It, a resounding score of 4- 1. Playing udder leas thin ideal conditions, Clinton made no mistake this time and the score, with a little bit of luck, could quite easily have been doubled, Right from the starting whistle there was no doubt of Clinton's superiority., This was rewarded with a lovely goal by Bill Can- telon who carried the ball in from the right wing and beat the goalkeeper with a low shot into the corner. Clinton had no fewer than six near misses Within the space of minutes but they went in at half-time only one goal up, After the restart Clinton again came out pressing with Dan McCallum seeing a beautiful shot hit the post and rebound into play.Charlie Lipp, Graham Yeats, Gord Riley and Don Armstrong all had shots SIXTH-PACE Purse $300 1. Another goal, however, was inevitable with all this pressure and once again Bill Cantelon, showing reat determination and tenacity, put the' ball in the back of the net to make the score 2-0. A few minutes later, Clinton went fur- ther ahead when Olen McLachlan took advantage of a defensive me)(-4- which sent Yeats, Armstrong and himself in alone with only the goalkeeper to beat. McLachlan shot from an almost impossible angle, fooling the 'keeper who obviously expected him to pass the ball in front of the net. With 15 minutes to go, a free kick awarded just outside the 18 yard line, against Clinton, resulted in the Portuguese' only goal, The ball was cleared over the Clinton defence, hit the goalpost and bounced into the net, giving Derwin Carter no chance. Once again, Carter turned in an excellent display in goal, a position he would ap- pear to have made his own, The second half was marred by too much rough play from the Portuguese, who apparently , found this the only means of stopping the Clinton players. Four of their number were cautioned by the referee and one player was sent off after receiving a second caution in an altercation with Armstrong. Armstrong was given a caution for retaliation. Portuguese staged a late rally and beseiged the Clinton defence but they held on to their 3-1 lead, until a few minutes before time when McLachlan sent a perfect pass in front of the goal to Yeats who beat the goalkeeper with a low ball to make the score a well deserved 4-1 for Clinton. An exhibition game has been arranged for this Thursday August 2nd against Goderich who are at present second top of the league. Kick-off time is 7 p.m. at the Community Park.
