COMING ALIVE IN '13
Summer comp
for crippled children
As temperatures rise, so do
the hopes of all youngsters
eagerly awaiting the end of
school and the start of summer.
For many,' summer camp is
the big attraction.
For the crippled child, par-
ticularly the more severely
disabled child, summer camp is
much more than that. For
some, it's perhaps the only
major change in their surroun-
dings that year.
This is where the Ontario
Society for Crippled Children
and its five summer 'camps en-
ter the picture with the largest
crippled children's camping
program in the world, thanks to
the continued public support of
its annual Easter Seal appeal.
On July 1, five specially
designed camps owned and
operated by the Society will
again await the noisy arrival of
the first of more than one
thousand excited youngsters.
Woodeden Camp to the west
of London has been serving
crippled children from South-
western Ontario since 1946.
Here youngsters can compete in
friendly games and activities,
not so much against each other
but against their individual
handicaps.
All activities are carefully
designed to encourage and con-
tinue the active rehabilitation
of each child both physically
and emotionally in pleasant
surroundings. Particular em-
phasis is placed on individual
participation by every camper.
This year, the Ontario
Society for Crippled Children
has offered Woodeden's
facilities to the Rehabilitation
Foundation for the Disabled
from June 15 to June 26 for a
program for some 35 young
handicapped adults. For many
of these young men and women,
Woodeden will be a familiar
place where old ex-campers can
get together in a convivial at-
mosphere and swap camping
experiences of their younger
days.
Woodeden's 23 permanent
buildings and 100 acre land-
scaped setting can accom-
modate 64 youngsters at a time
during each of its four summer
camping periods.
The camp is located on the
western outskirts of London on

anytime they are in the area
during the summer months.
In addition, a special Camp
Open House will be held from
2:30 to 5;30 p.m. on Sunday,
July 22, on which occasion
visitors will have an even
greater opportunityp to inspect
the program and facilities and
see one aspect of what their
Easter Seal dollars are doing.
The church was decorated
with candelabra and
arrangements of white gladiolii
and yellow shasta mums. The
officiating minister was
Reverend Donald Beck.
