Dwight B, Strain, the new
minister of the First Baptist
Church of Clinton, admits he
has a tough task ahead of him.
He has the arduous job of
rebuilding a church that has
nearly been closed several
times in the last several years
because of poor attendance.
Pastor Strain freely admits
that one of his prime reasons
for coming to Clinton was the
challenge of taking an almost
dead church and building , it
back up again. ."I think that
Clinton has real potential," he
said.
Pastor Strain believea that
the way to lure people back to
the Baptist Church is through
the medium of gospel song,
"There are many people in
town here who would come if
we offered gospel music. Many
of them aren't Baptist either,"
he said.
Moving to the Albert Street
Manse from Cobourg, the 30,
year-old Pastor Strain has been
active in the church since 1963
when he was missionary,
teacher, and minister on the
Glen Vowell Indian Reserve in"
British Columbia. In 1965 he
moved to the Six Nations In-
dian Reserve near Brantford
where he was the minister for
four churches.
He left the ministry in 1967
to teach secondary school and
work in the world of commerce.
The last time the Clinton
Baptist Church had a full-time
resident minister was in 1965
when Rev. Craig Peters was in
the manse.
Rev. McWhinnie of Goderich
has been coming down and
taking services lately, but dwin-
dling attendance the past
several years has brought
rumors that the church would
be closed. Pastor Strain says he
hopes he can reverse that trend.
A graduate of the University
families coming from Clinton,
Bayfield, Goderich and the
surrounding areas.
of Toronto, Pastor Strain is
married and has four children,
His wife, Bernadette and their
four children, Loraine, $;
Lorelei, 7; Bram, 3; and Linda
Sue, ,,are moving into the
church's manse on Albert
Street this week and. Pastor
Strain will conduct his first ser-
vice at the church this, coming
Sunday at 11 a,m,
The church has spent nearly,
$5,000 in renovating and
redecorating the manse. Paster
Strain said he hopes to be here
at least five years, depending
on the wishes of the
congregation,
Even though he was offered
several established postings in
larger centres, Pastor Strain
said he chose Clinton because it
not only offered him a
challenge but "I did a little
research into Clinton and I
liked what I found."
He plans on wasting no time
in getting the gospel singing
started in the church. On May
19 and 20,, the Sellwood
Singers, Nashville recording ar-
tists, will be coming to the
church along with the Hisey
Family from Barrie. Another
unamed country gospel group is
also coming.
The second gospel singing
service is planned for June 13
when Canada's Galileans, a
trio from Guelph, will be
featured.
All in all, Pastor Strain has a
busy and hectic life planned in
the next few years.
