On Wednesday, April 4, the
Huron. District Homemakers
had a -well-attended meeting at
Conestoga College, Clinton.
Their guest speaker was Mrs. J.
Mackinnon, (Clinton's own
Madeline Hawkins), from
Hamilton,
Mrs. Mackinnon who is
Executive Director of the
Hamilton Homemakers has
established a society which has
a very important place in that
fastgrpwing city.
With the services of
homemakers, Mrs. Mackinnon
sees a promising future for our
community where so many
citizens prefer to remain in
their own homes, while
recuperating from an illness,
Council, this week, granted
building permits to Ken Murch
for an addition, $5000; to Chas.
Proctor, a pool, $4000; Robert
and Willa Taylor, house,
$18,000; Haugh Tire Supply,
sign, $800; Alan Reid, an ad-
dition,$4500.
Daylight Saving Time will
begin Sunday, April 29 at 2
a.m. ,
Mr. Tom Twyford has been
employed to care for the town
offices due to the serious illness
of Mr. Norman Livermore.
Council has purchased 1,000
sets of coasters—four per
set—on which is the town crest.
These will be used as
souvenirs.
Mayor Don Symons, who is
chairman of the Towns and
Villages section of the
Association of Municipalities of
Ontario, is in charge of the
program for the 1973 conven-
tion to be held on May 3 and 4
at Leamington. The guest
speaker will be the Hon. John
White, Provincial Treasurer
and Minister of Economics and
Intergovernmental Affairs.
Several members of town coun-
cil will attend the convention.
A publication from the
Department of Consumer and
Corporate Affairs has _came
into our office here. One, of the
articles is about "Junk Mail"
which has become a household
expression but it's ti fighting
phrase to the Canada. Post
Tice,
"That unsolicited mail in
your letter box, offering
magazine subscriptions book
club memberships and a host of
other goodies at "sensational
savings" brings millions of
dollars into the Post Office cof-
fers, Without the revenue from
direct mail firms, the cost of
first-class mail to a private
citizen would be somewhere out
on the Milky Way.
You have four choices about
what's to be done about that
unwanted mail and the free
samples: use it; dump it; send
it back or refuse to accept it. If
a book club or record club
sends you from out of the blue
its latest best seller, then you
may keep it and not be forced
to pay for it later when a bill
might come. That is unless you
indicated at some earlier stage
that you were prepared to ac-
cept their offers to purchase. If
you did, then, you're obliged to
pay up.
Same with unsolicited
magazines--read them at
leisure then throw them away.
Ignore the bills. They'll stop
sometime, probably after the
"we' re-reluctant-to-do-this-to-a
favourite-subscriber-but-we're-
gonna-take-you-to-court" war-
ning. If they don't, wait for the
summons and then reach for a
lawyer.
Don't ask the postman to
stop putting unsolicited mail
through your letter box. He
can't do it. The law says that if
someone addresses a letter to
you, that letter is yours and
nobody else's. The Post Office
does have legal authority to in-
terfere with anything mailed
that is obscene, indecent or im-
moral.
