Another storm could seriously threaten more cottages. (photo by C.T,Rudd) Miles of sandy beaches and tons of shoreline earth disappeared into Lake Huron over the weekend as ten foot waves combined with record high water levels, threatening many area cottages. These cottages north of Bayfield now lack a beach and part of the front lawn following the weekend blow. STORM DAMAGE Gale force winds played havoc along the shores of Lake Huron during the weekend and caused reportedly millions of dollars in damage. However, we were more fortunate in Bayfield than a great many communities.-hardest hit was the beach area below Pioneer Park, Brigadier Morgan Smith's and southerly along the beach fronting many sum- mer homes. Brig. Smith has worked ar- duously, and put a great deal of expense into building a trial wall with gabion baskets. This wall had proved very suc- cessful and plans are to con- tinue this year by building more walls. These walls are built of baskets; three feet deep, three feet wide and six feet long and are filled with huge rocks and are piled three baskets high and extend 50 feet out into Lake Huron. To be effective" these walls must be placed at approximately 100 foot inter- vals along the beach. In talking to Brig. Smith, on Monday morning he said that "the key basket (the one closest to the shore) had emptied and consequently the water had washed in behind and had taken out most of the beach that had been built up, and caused a great deal of erosion. This is a very serious problem and our hopes are that we can build more walls this year and hopefully the water will have receded .enough that this work can he started as soon as possible." The boats in the Bayfield river were very safe, thanks to our natural harbour, and it is to be hoped that no one be allowed to tamper• with our natural harbour that has been a refuge for may craft in terrific storms, We can only realize what could happen after seeing what the boats went through in Goderich harbour on the weekend, bobbing around like corks afloat in the sea. 4 H Report The first meeting of the 4 H Club was held Feb. 26 in the Municipal Building.
