March 2 in the Municipal
Building, with the president,
Clair Merner in the chair.
The meeting opened in the
usual manner with the
National Anthem and the
Lord's Prayer repeated in
unison. Twenty-two members

received from the family of the
late Mrs. Norma Wallis.
Five members paid dues,
namely Clair and Dorothy Mer-
ner, Dorothy Weston, Roy and
Freida Scotchmer.

mation on the Senior Citizens

Community Centre.

Southcott, Progressive Conser-
vative candidate in the up-
coming Huron-riding by-
election; whose address was
non-political.

PRAYER DAY
Mrs. Gwen Pemberton was
guest speaker in Trinity
Anglican Church, Friday after-
noon, March 2, when members
of four churches joined together
for the World Day of Prayer.
These included Presbyterians,
United Church, Dutch Reform
and Anglicans. Mrs. Pember-
ton developed the theme "Alert
in Our Time," stressing the
meaning of "Alert." From the
list of issues which were
suggested for silent reflection
on the part of Canadian
women, she chose oil and gas
drilling in the North. She gave
as an example, a woman who
had been alert in her time.
Barbara Heck , the "Mother
of the Methodist Church in
America," who was born of
German refugee parents in
Ireland, heard John Wesley
preach there, and became a
devout follower. She emigrated
to New York as a bride and
pioneered in America on the
boundary of Vermont and New
York State. On the outbreak of
the American Revolution she
fled with her "draft-dodger"
husband Paul, to Montreal and
finally settled on land along
the St. Lawrence River; where
today an imposing monument
stands in her memory. It was
erected by American
Methodists and can be seen
from Highway 2 in the
graveyard of the Little Blue
Church near Prescott.
The inscription on her
monument reads in part: "She
set her brave soul against
rugged possibilities of the
future and brought into
existence Methodism in
America."
Mrs. Elva Metcalf, Mrs. J. B.
Higgins, Mrs. William D. Arm-
strong, Mrs. John Land, Mrs,
John Siertsema, and Mrs. Eric
Earl also took part in the very
