Do or die for 'Stangs Midgets take playoffs
Exeter Hawks scored a goal
with less than three minutes
left in play to defeat the Clin-
ton Mustangs in the fifth game
of the Junior "D" playoff game
in Exeter last Tuesday night.
The 3.2 win gives the Hawks
a 3-1 lead in the best of seven
series with one game tied. The
Hawks only need a tie in Clin-
ton this Friday night to wrap
up the series,
The Tuesday night game was
a close one with Clinton getting
some bad breaks which would
have given them the game and
then the Hawk's Peter Gill put
the icing on the cake with his
tie breaking goal at 17:37 of the
third period.
The Exeter Hawks defeated
the Clinton Mustangs 6-4 in a
penalty filled and uncontrolled
game last Friday night in
Exeter.
The assigned referees,
Overholt and Werboweski
called a total of 30 penalties
and also let the game get out of
hand early in the game. Exeter
received 17 of the penalties.
Phil Petrie opened the
scoring early in the game.
Exeter replied with two goals,
one of them on a powerplay.
Brian Kennedy scored a
beautiful goal on a perfect
passing play with Mike Anstett.
The second period also,ended
in a tie 4-4. Exeter scored early
in the second, and Paul John-
son tied it back up. Exeter
scored less than two minutes
later. Jim Cameron scored later
in the period when a shot from
the point ricocheted off his
knee and bounced into the net.
Exeter seemed to get the
breaks in the third period as
they scored the only two goals
of the period.
Bill Weber was ordered from
the bench at 19:44, when he
received a game misconduct for
a loud dispute with the refs
while he protested a bad call by
them. Poss Livermore took over
the reins for the last 16
seconds.
The Mustangs defence didn't
help out Gary Yeoman too
much at times letting the
Hawks get more close-in shots
than they should have.

two out of three playoffs with
Mitchell,
Clinton took the first game
with a 5.2 victory. The second
game went into overtime with
the teams tied 2-2, only to have
Mitchell win 3-2.
The Clinton team was
frustrated time and time again
by the Mitchell goaltender and
a total of 16 penalties were
handed out with seven to Clin-
ton and nine to Mitchell.
Neil Colquhoun opened the
scoring unassisted followed by
a Mitchell goal which gave
them the go ahead in the
second period.
Clinton roared back at the 12
minute mark with Randy
Miller driving home a nice pass
from Paul Garrow, Mitchell
closed out the scoring to win 3-

overtime period.

The local Bantams were
beaten 5-3 by Point Edward
Sunday afternoon in the Clin-
ton Bantam Tournament in a
well played game one of the
best to date seen in the tour-
nament.
After falling behind 1-0,
Peter Thompson scored to even
the score, Neil Colquhoun and
Bill Roy assisted. Point Ed-
ward scored again and took a
2-1 lead to the dressing room at
the second period break.
Clinton came back to tie the
game with Paul Preistap taking
a long lead pass from Frank
Flynn to do the trick. Rob
Heard on a play with linemates
Mike Gibbings and Dave
Clynick assisting, gave Clinton
a lead which they were unable
to hold. Point Edward came
back with two late game goals
and finished it off by scoring a
game of the year with Clinton.
They seemed to have Clinton's
number and were checking
Clinton at every turn.
In fact, the only bright spot
during the first two periods for
Clinton was Neil Colquhoun's
blistering shot from about 20
feet out that was in the net
before the Mitchell goalie could
move. The play was set up by
John Graham and Don
MacDonald.
With the 10 minute mark
showing on the clock, Mitchell
appeared to have the series
won with a comfortable lead of
4-1, However they forgot to tell
the MacDonald, Graham and
Colquhoun line.
John Graham caught fire and
scored four straight goals to
lead his team to victory 5-4 and
take the series two games to
one. The whole Clinton team
played well,

Once again this year the
crowds at the Bantam tour-
nament have been disappoin-
ting. This is exceptional
hockey - many of last year's
competitors we learn from their
coaches, have advanced to
Junior hockey. - this should in-
