On Friday night in Exeter,
the Mustangs lost a heart-
breaker to the Hawks by a
score of 4.3, The winning goal
came off the stick of Jim Guen-
ther at 7:45 of a 10 minute
overtime period.
Both teams came out and
played the excellent brand of
hockey predicted last week. It
was a very exciting game for
both teams' fans.
Exeter got the first tally of
the game from John Mommer-
steeg and Ron Graham replied
for Clinton on a nice goal, and
was followed 23 seconds later
by Paul Johnson, who put the
Mustangs out ahead, Both of
the goals were on a powerplay
as Brian Bestard of the Hawks
was serving a double minor
penalty.
4 The Mustangs kept the
Hawks completely bottled up
the second period and had
many good chances to score but
a combination of John Hayter
in goal for Exeter, and poor
shooting by the Mustangs, kept
them off the scoresheet.
At the 19 second mark of the
third period, Brian Kennedy
steered home a shot by Jim
Cameron to put the `Stangs out
front 3-1 on another powerplay
goal
The Hawks then seemed to
have the breaks go their way,
as they bounced back to score
two power play goals, and then
scored the winner in overtime.
A total of 17 penalties were
called, with Exeter taking 10 of
them.

On Sunday, the Hawks
fought hack to tie the Mustangs
2-2.
This game seemed to be a
continuation of Friday' nights
game. Both games were filled
with action, and also had close
checking, good bodychecking,
good passing, and lots of fast,
hard skating. The Mustangs
again had trouble putting the
puck home, as they missed
several good opportunities to
score.
The first period was
scoreless, being a goaltenders
dual. Both goalies, John
Hayter and Gary Yeoman, have
played outstanding so far in the
series,
Exeter was first to get on the
scoreboard at 9:15 of the
second period. The second
period ended 1-0.
Clinton came out knowing
they'd haye to win this game to
even the series, and tried
valiantly to score. Finally Dan
Colquhoun scored a beautiful
goal to tie the game. The
Mustangs then bounced back
for another tally with
Colquhoun getting his second
of the night.
Clinton held off the Exeter
marksmen, until 15;57 when a
long shot by a Hawk, caught a
defect in the ice, and skipped
over Gary Yeoman's pad,
tying the game 2-2,
The last tour minutes of the
game got more exciting as both
teams came close to scoring.
The overtime period was
played wide-open, with rushes
going back and forth. Each
team again missed several good
opportunities to score, and the
game ended a tie.
Gary Yeoman has played
outstanding in the series so far,
allowing only six goals in two
games. Yeoman got a lot of
help from his teammates for a
change and it has helped him
greatly. Exeter got seven of the
13 penalties.
The third game of the series
is this Friday night in Exeter at
8:30. The series resumes Sun-
day at 8:30 in Clinton, and
again Tues. in Exeter.
The Mustangs would like to
thank the great fan support
received so far, so if you
haven't been coming to the
games, come out now for some
great hockey.

Midgets end
regular play .
Clinton Lions Midgets
finished of their regular season
with a nine win and nine loss
record after dropping their last
two games to Seaforth and
Goderich by 3-2 and 5-3 scores
respectively.
The Seaforth game was the
best Clinton played all season
but Clinton penalties led to
their downfall, with the tying
and winning goals for Seaforth
coming when Clinton were men
short.
Clinton opened the scoring
with Greg Butler tipping in a
hard drive from John Graham
at the point. Butch Heipel
scored Clinton's second goal
from Jamie Thompson. Clinton
out-hustled and out-played the
Seaforth team most of the game
but lost because of penalties.
Gerald Cantelon played a stan-
dout game on defense and
Seaforth won the game with
only 30 seconds left to play.
Last Sunday, Clinton jour-
neyed to Goderich, but were
suffering from the effects of the
hard-hitting game with
Seaforth and dropped a 5-3
decision to Goderich. The Clin-
ton team were also short of the
services of Randy Millar and
John Graham who had
received game misconducts at
Seaforth.
Clinton marksmen were
Thompson from West, Butler
from MacDonald and Thomp-
son, and Steve Cook on a
beautiful solo effort.
Goderich scorers were Ar-
bour, Palmer, Merriam, Mar-
shall and Worgan.
The Midgets would like to
thank their kind supporters
and are eagerly waiting for the
play-offs to begin. Dates have
not been announced.

10—CLINTON NEWS-RECORD, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 1973
Mustangs fighting Exeter Recreationally speaking
BY MIKE STEPHENS
For those of you who read this paper on Thursday mor-
nings you won't be too late to catch the noon skate which
will be on Thursday, this week only. Beginning again next
week we will continue on a regular Tuesday schedule.
The only part of the Winter Carnival I would like to men-
tion in my column this week is the family skate night. It was
by far the greatest turn out for public skating in a long time.
For those of you who were here we will be carrying it on, on
some type of regular basis, the rest of this season, Watch for
announcements.
Beginning next week in the paper there will be another
section on recreation. It will be in the form of a schedule
and will tell of all recreational activities going on in the up-
coming week. Watch for it.
Just a reminder that men's fitness begins week two next
Monday night at the high school, (haven't had too many
calls from men over 40, where are you hiding), and ladies
crafts will be on Wednesday from 7-8:30.
Very shortly we will be beginning a number of programs
for adults 60 years of age and over. Keep your eye to this
column for more details.
This past week Pacific Enterprises Inc. presented the film
"Vanishing Wilderness" at the auditorium of our arena. It
was a fairly good turnout considering the lack of advertising
they put out.
I guess I couldn't end the column without at least men-
tioning the fact that this weekend begins the "Bantam Tour-
nament". This is our Fifth Annual Tournament and it looks
to be as good if not better than any previous tournament in
those five years. It's good entertainment for one and all.
The schedule and costs are included in the paper, please
consult it for more details.
Well, I guess if I don't see you this week I'll talk to you
again next week in the paper.
Bluebirds gain WOB
margin.
On Wednesday night Feb 14,
many took advantage of the
free admission to attend the
Family Skate from 6-7:30. A
crowd of well over 150, many.
not familiar faces around the
arena this season, donned
skates to struggle, or otherwise,
around the rink. It would be
great to see that kind of a
crowd at regular public skating.
At 8 the Clinton Bluebirds
faced off against a determined
broomball club from Blyth, The
result was a 2-2 deadlock which
provided some exciting action.
A half-time special event was a
flaming baton act by Miss Lori
Biggin who received a fine
round of applause for her per-
formance.
The highlight on Wednesday
was undoubtedly-' Hospitgity—
Night, sponsored by the Clinton
Recreation Committee. A
jovial crowd that kept tables
full on a continual basis was on
hand for good food, good enter-
tainment and some great ad lib
acts. A lot of credit goes to the
organizers for lining up some
great fun.
A new facet of the Winter
Carnival program this year was
the increased usage of ice time
during the week by local
schools. Crowds of enthusiastic
children kept the arena hop-
ping and provided some busy
moments for the arena staff.
