David Storey. At ease in both
classical and modern roles, the
highly • respected Israeli actor
has twice toured the U.S. and
Canada with the Habimah
company and has also perfor-
med extensively on television
and radio in his own country.
"Othello" will also feature
Martha Henry as Desdemona
and Douglas Rain as Iago, Miss
Henry was last at Stratford in
1971 when she was seen as
Lucienne in the Feydeau farce
"There's One In Every
Marriage". Mr. Rain is also
returning after a season's ab-
sence, having last appeared at
the Festival as Mosca in the
1971 production of "Volpone."
They are at present appearing
together at the Manitoba
Theatre Centre in Ibsen's
Hedda Gabler, with Miss
Henry featured in the title role
and Mr. Rain as George
Tesman.
Last performed at Stratford
in 1959, "Othello" is one of
Shakespeare's most powerful
tragedies and the Moor himself
one of the playwright's most
moving creations.
The fourth play to open at
the Festival Theatre will be
Shakespeare's seldom-
performed romance play,
"Pericles", on July 24. Jean
Gascon will direct the produc-
tion. One of Shakespeare's last
works, "Pericles" is a com-
bination of allegory and fairy- ,
tale, depicting an ideal world
envisioned by the playwright in
his maturity. Unlike the world
of the tragedies, where the
malignity of an Iago or an Ed-
mund can destroy those around
them, the world of the' romance
plays is governed by ultimately
benign gods who decree the
triumph of virtue over evil
before irreparable harm can be
done. This will be Stratford's
first production of the play.
The Avon Theatre this year
will house a season of Russian
drama, featuring two comic

Mrs. Betty Cardno of
Seaforth announced Wed-
nesday that she would be a
candidate for the Conservative
nomination in the forthcoming
Huron by-election. The
nomination meeting is being
held in Clinton on Friday
night.
The by-election set for March
15 has become necessary with
the retirement of Hon. Charles
MacNaughton, who has
represented the riding since
1958.
Mrs. Cardno, a member of
Seaforth Council since 1965
when she assumed office
following the death of her
husband, Seaforth Reeve
Nelson Cardno. She is a native
of Blanchard Township and
was the former Betty Read.
Mrs. Cardno, a registered
nurse, trained in Stratford
General Hospital and later
acquired a diploma in public
The Huron County Health
Unit has started a special
screening program for pre-
school children. The test is
designed to find specific areas
where a child may need extra
encouragement and guidance.
It is not an intelligence test.
The child is asked to perform
various tasks. The tasks vary
according to age. In some cases,
the nurse will ask the mother
questions such as: "Does he
wash and dry his hands?"
Perhaps the child may be asked
if he can kick a ball forward.
The hope is that with such 'a
Three plays by Shakespeare
and a comedy by Oliver Gold-
smith will share the spotlight
at Stratford's Festival Theatre
this summer.
The 1973 Season at the
Festival Theatre will open
June 4 with Shakespeare's
"The Taming of The Shrew,"
one of the two works the Com-
pany is performing on tour in
Europe this spring. The play
will be restaged for presen-
tation on the Festival Theatre's
thrust stage following the Com-
pany's return to Canada in
health at the University of
Toronto. She is in charge of the
Huron County Home Care
program and prior to the in-
troduction of the program two
years ago, served for several
years on the staff of the Huron
County Health Unit.
During the years she has ser-
ved on council, Mrs, Cardno
has taken an interest in mat-
ters affecting not only Seaforth
but the area as a whole.
In deciding to allow her
name to stand, Mrs. Cardno
said she was prompted by her
concern that present trends in
government could• lead to a
deterioration in the atmosphere
of living that means so much to
people in areas such as Huron.
Her association over many
years with people across the
county has indicated the
necessity of Huron having an
informed voice if it is to avoid
losing its identity.
screening test, guidance can be
given to the parents.
Perhaps the parents should
read to the child more so that
the child will be able to under-
stand meanings of words.
Perhaps the child needs toys
that use his fingers, perhaps the
preschooler needs to spend
some time away from his
mother to prepare him for
school. The test itself takes
about 20 minutes.
These tests are carried out at
each Child Health Clinic and
appointments should be made
to avoid endless waiting. If you
are interested in having your
child screened or for any infor-
mation, please call the Huron
County Health Unit at the
following numbers: Goderich,
524-8301; Clinton, 482-9661.

one of the most popular of-
ferings at the Festival Theatre

"King Lear" at Stratford in
1972 and for the European
Tour, returns to. direct
"Othello," which opens June 6.
Design for the production will
be by Annena Stubbs and
music by Louis Applebaum,
both of whom worked with Mr.
William last year on "King
Lear."
Making his Stratford debut
in the title role of
Shakespeare's great tragedy
will be Nahum Buchman a
leading actor with Israel's
world-renowned Habimah
Theatre. Mr. Buchman has
played the role once before, in a
Habimah production of 1967,
which 'wrought him widespread
critical acclaim. Twice the win-
ner of his country's "Best Male
Actor" award, and nominated
for it again last year, Mr. Buch-
man has had leading roles in
many of the Habimah's major
productions, including "The
Crucible," in which he played
Proctor: "Julius Caesar", in
which he was featured as
Brutus and Exit the King, in
which he played the title role.
Most recently, he was seen in

The Russian season at the
Avon opens on June 29 with "A
Month In The Country" by
Ivan Turgenev, in a translation
by Andrew MacAndrew,
Turgenev's observations on an
age-old theme - the rivalry
between two women for the
love of a young man - prove
him a compassionate and witty
chronicler of human folly.
Brian Jackson, last at Stratford
in 1970 to design "Vatzlav",
returns as the production 's
designer.
The second play at the Avon
will be Nikolai Gogol's "The
Marriage Brokers", a tongue-
in-cheek look at arranged
marriages, in which an
amateur matchmaker pits his
skill against a professional with
disastrous, albeit hilarious,
results. Opening Night is
August 3.
Further casting will be an-
nounced at a later date.

to the Ladies' lounge is a large,
round coffee table - this had

useful coffee table by Ed. For-
ter, Twelve new chairs are to be
purchased also.
