Recreationally speaking BY MIKE STEPHENS First of all I'd like to thank all those who phoned in or even came in to talk to me about programs they think we could use in Clinton, It was both gratifying and infor- mative, There was a great turnout to the ladies arts and crafts meeting, We decided to hold an opening class on Tuesday, February 6th at 7:30 p.m. at the Community Centre, This first class will be just a get to know each other and become involved in crafts class. I might point out also that we can only take a limited number of ladies and the number of openings we have are now at a premium. The men's fitness class as the ladies crafts was a resoun- ding success, We have decided to make it a combination ex- orcize and games program. We will meet again on Monday, February 5 at 8 p.m, More details as to exact program and the location etc. will be given out in next weeks paper, so watch for it. On Tuesday the 30th of January we will have a special noon time program at the arena. This is geared for the working person who for one reason or another can't get out skating, This Tuesday from noon-1 p.m. the rink will be open for skating. Its good for ex excise and is also refreshing, you'll be surprised at how well you feel at work that afternoon, Bring your own lunch or buy it at our snack bar or for those of you looking to lose weight, don't bring one at all. There will be a 25 cent admission charge for the skating. If this works out well we could have it on a regular basis, So lea not wait around for the program to get started letA come out the first week. I am working on programs now so please remember if you have any ideas phone or come and see me. Tell your friends too. Wee Wees played too Maxwell House Instant 10 oz. Although Clinton Ont. lost both games by an identical 4-1 count, the score did not in- dicate the calibre of play. The goal scorer in the first game for Clinton Ont was Don Proctor, unassisted. Bill Brautigan got the lone goal in the second game. Although Clinton Ont missed some of their players through the flu, the balance of the boys com- mended themselves on and off the ice. The trophy went to Clinton N.Y. by an 8-2 total goals count. Captain "Happy" The first meeting in the new year of the Clinton Chapter Beta Sigma Phi was held in the board room at the Credit Union. The opening Ritual was repeated by the 12 members and this was followed by minutes, communications and Grabeldinger accepted the trophy on behalf of the Clinton N.Y. team. Mitchell and and the Social committee head is making arrangements for a night out with the husbands. The girls that went to Clin- ton hospital in December repor- ted to the service chairman on their activities there and the Christmas tree was also star trophy. All in all, the series was a good one and the boys are looking forward to next years meeting. The fan support was great which was appreciated by the coaches and managers. We hope this continues through the rest of our schedule, Brautegan were also credited Brautigan were also credited Paul Taylor and Rob Hart. Blyth selected Robbie Knights as the star for Clinton, and Clinton, selected Steve Reid as the Blyth first star. Each of these boys received a hockey stick in recognition of their playing. any member of the chapter. Marion Durnin and Betty Jo Cudmore gave the cultural program titled "Music into Drama and Dance". An ex- cellent discussion on dance music, waltz, minuet and opera was part of their story. Music of different forms were presen- ted and selections of melody, artnony, tone, color and form, were found in these. The Fish and Game Bantams played five games from Friday night to Sunday night commen- cing with a 7-2 win over Clin- ton N.Y. in Minor Hockey Week-end activity. The New York visitors put up a good game after their long trip but the Locals were not to be denied. WOAA playoff scheduling made it necessary to have the annual series a one game affair and Ontario with their win made it a sweep, since they were winners in early December in Clinton N,Y. Neil Colquhoun nine, Mike Gibbings scored two each with singles to Dave Clynick, Paul Priestap and Dave Counter Priestap picked up three assists, Bill Roy 2, Rob Heard,Neil Colquhoun and Dave Counter got one each. Jeff Simmons of Clinton N.Y. received the D.A. Kay and Son trophy as first star; Dave Coun- ter, the Herman's Men's Wear ,Trophy as second star; and Paul Priestap, the Ball- Macaulay Ltd. trophy as Third Star. The Huron Pines Realty Ltd. Trophy for the best goalie went to the Ontario pair of Rob Harkes and Don Peterson. The custom of N.Y. observers picking Ontario Stars and On- tario the N.Y. stars, as in the past was the case again. Since Clinton's involvement in the Durham W.O.A.A. playoffs was unavoidable despite numerous calls to W.O.A.A. and O.M.H.A. headquarters, Goderich Ban- tams came in Saturday night and played a 2-2 tie with Clin- ton N.Y. Moody and Andrews of Goderich received sticks as the stars of their team picked by Clinton, N.Y. observers while Goderich observers picked Kert Gennings and Paul Coderre of Clinton N.Y. as stars and recipients of the sticks. The Clinton Minor Hockey Committee appreciated the co- operation of Keith Hiusser of Goderich in bringing his Ban- tam team in Saturday to provide a second game for our Clinton N.Y. Bantam guests. Saturday saw the Bantams hit the ice in Durham at 9:30 a.m. where they lost a thriller to Mitchell 7-6 in overtime this relegated them to the con- solation side of the W.Q.A,A. qualifying series for 0.M.1-I.A. Bantam "C" competition and proved a temporary blessing in disguise as they proceeded to beat Wingham 4.1 at noon and Mount Forest 12-3 at 3;30 p.m. This gave them the dubious honour of playing a sudden death final ,against Durham on Durham ice Sun- day afternoon at 5 p.m. Durham had disposed of Wingham, Mitchell and Wiar- ton, In the Mitchell game, Rob Heard and Neil Colquhoun each scored two unassisted goals while Neil got a third from Paul Priestap and Priestap got one from Colquhoun and Counter. In the 4-1 victory over Wingham Colquhoun scored from Priestap, Heard from Roy, Mike Gibbings from Clynick and Priestap from Colquhoun. The 12 goals against Mount Forest came from Paul Priestap - 4, Mike Gibbings - 3, Dave Counter - 3, Dave Clynick and Rob Heard - 1 each. Assists totalling 15 went to Neil Colquhoun - 5, Al Taylor - 2, Rob Heard - 2, Bill, Roy, Frank Flynn, Rob Heard, Mike Gib- bings, Paul Priestap and Steve Steep - one each. Sunday against Durham Clinton struck early with Neil Colquhoun converting a Paul Priestap pass for a beautiful goal at the 30 second Mark, This proved to be the final moment of glory as Durham came back to score three in the first and three in the second as the heavy schedule of games and travelling took its toll. Paul Priestap scored from Frank Flynn early in the third period but Durham had all the right bounces as our tired boys couldn't put it together. Neil Colquhoun scored late in the third but Durham took it 11-3. The game, full of frustration for Clinton, was closer than the score indicated and the management and fans are very proud of the effort the team put forth under extremely difficult conditions. During a gap in the schedule, the Bantams will attempt to pick up some previously post- poned or exhibition games and it is hoped they will be on the ice at their customary 7 p.m. starting time Saturday evening• opponent as yet is unknown. During Minor Hockey Weekend, the Clinton Wee- Wees played a strong house league game. Coach Murray Taylor's Blues defeated Fred Lobb's Green Machine by a score of 4- 2. The Blues got goals from Ian Peck, Steve Boussey, Tim Ad- dison, and Wayne Roorda while Sean Van Dongen and Randy Marriage retaliated for the Green Machine.' A good game was played by all with strong goaltending, at both ends of the rink, Just a reminder: parents who bring their boy to the rink and don't even see that his skates are on properly will find him left on the bench because there are just too many boys for three or four parents to look after.
