The same board as in 1972 was returned to office. Mr. Watson Webster is chair- man and board members are Top speakers in Huron to compete Trustees' Association and co- sponsored since 1958 by On- tario Hydro. The provincial finals take place in Toronto during the convention of the Ontario Education Association in the week of winter break. In recognition of the current Emphasis on communication in our society the format of these contests has been changing to put more Emphasis on com- munications skills rather than on Oratory. Last year for the first time the contestarits were subjected to questioning by the judges on the subjects of the prepared talks so that they are being judged on their ability to inform, explain and instruct, This year in addition each contestant will be expected to read for two minutes from a book which he has enjoyed, Reading aloud has been an art neglected for many years. It will be interesting to see how our young people handle this challenge. The Huron County Convener, Elementary Schools, Mrs. J. W. Wallace and the principals of each of the host schools welcome the attendance and in- terest of the public at these con- tests, Many drivers have spent a lifetime regretting the time they tried to save a few moments, says the Ontario Safety League. The registrations for the Oral Communications Festival are starting to flow in from the Elementary Schools in Huron County, Each school is allowed one entry for the preliminaries which will take place in three locations: At Our Lady of Mount Carmel School on January 30; at Clinton Public ▪ School on January 31; and at Wingham Public School on February 1. All begin at 1;30 p.m. The three top speakers from each division will then compete at Clinton Public School on February 6. Prizes of created book ends and wall plaques are being donated this year as they were by the Maple Leaf Chap- ter, I,O.D,E, of Goderich to the three who are judged best in the county. The first place winner will then go on to the Zone finals at Glencoe on February 17. These contest have been sponsored since 1927 by the Ontario Public School Ross Scott, William McAsh, John Broadfoot, Gordon Richardson, Mac Wilson, Wilfred Chuter, Adam Wilson. Mrs. H. Taylor is secretary- treasurer. Mr. Adam Wilson reported that the new ground has been cleared and will be ready for levelling later in the year. Mr. Arie Verhoef has been engaged as grave opener. There can't even be very much snow left on the side roads to bring to the race tracks now, At any rate, all the various committees are busy with plans and we hope people are preparing floats for the parade. We, .who are simply spectators, sometimes do not appreciate all the work in- volved to make the various ac- tivities run smoothly and our hats are off to all who are'par- ticipating in any way. * * Another busy corner of town is the Wesley-Willis United Church. There always seems to be an activity of one kind or another taking place there, This Sunday evening the families of the church will en- joy an evening of fun and fellowship with singing and skits. * * Some hockey fans will no doubt remember John Crawford who played for the Boston Bruins. It has been drawn to our attention that Mr. Crawford, who was born in Dublin, Ontario and then lived in Clinton for some years, passed away this weekend.
