THURSDAY, -JANUARY 11, 1973-41 Colts win one lose ,one usta.ngs break 4xeter bubble The Clinton Mustangs defeated the league-leading Exeter Hawks twice over the weekend, On Friday the score was 5-4 at Exeter and the score t Clinton on Sunday was 5-3. Jim. Cameron's goal at 13:57 f the third period proved to be the winner on Friday night. It ame on a slapshot from the oint, after a nice set up by aul Johnson, Brian Kennedy opened the coring at 7:23 of the first period. When he deflected a pass from Johnson into the top right hand corner of the net, Gary Cummings also picked up an assist on the play. Exeter scored early in the second period (:21) but Bill MacDougall gave Clinton the lead again at 1:32. MacDougall skated into the slot to pick up his own rebound and banged a lovely shot home. Exeter again tied the game at 4:59. Cal Fremlin's beautiful slapshot from the point gave the Mustangs a 3-2 lead at 6:28. Johnson picked up an assist on Fremlin's goal, Mike Anstett scored during a scramble in front of the Exeter net at 18:40 to finish the scoring in that period. Johnson and Kennedy picked up the assists. Exeter struck back at 11:41 of the third. Cameron then scored at 13:57. Exeter put on the pressure but could, only manage one more at 15:22. The Clinton defence then cracked down and prevented any more opposing goals. Gary Yeomen played a very strong game in net for Clinton and was called upon many Imes to come up with a good ave. The defence also played ell, scoring three goals and topping Exeter on countless ccasions. Coach Bill Weber is lso to be commended for his rategy of playing the man in- ead of the puck at every op- portunity. _ „HELPS si WHEN DISASTER STRIKES! .1` The Mustangs have been a skating team, but they played a good hitting game. Their ex. cellent conditioning also showed up in the dying A total of 22 penalties were called, 12 going to Clinton. All were minor penalties except for a misconduct and a match penalty picked up by Clinton. Bill MacDougall was awar- ded first star by the Exeter of- ficials. On Sunday night at home, the Mustangs extended their winning streak to four games by downing Exeter 5-3, Ronny Graham's goal at 17:13 of the second period proved to be the winner. It came on a blistering slapshot from the slot area. Gary Cum- mings picked up an assist. Exeter came out flying in the first period and built up an early 2-0 lead on goals at 4:13 and 13:51 of the first period. Gord Riley replied for Clinton at 17:55 by scoring a power play goal which fooled Johnny Hayter completely. The second period was Clin- ton's all the way, as they came out flying and scored three goals in a row to take a second period lead, Randy Millar opened the scoring on a scram- ble in front of the Exeter goal at 9:54. Mike Anstett and Dan Colquhoun picked up the assists. At 12:50 Gary Cum- mings scored on another scram- ble in which Pete Thayer got an assist, Graham then scored the winner at 17:13. Exeter scored their last goal of the night at 18:35, Dan Coiquhoun's goal at 8:67 of the third period finished the scoring in the game. It was also the prettiest goal in the game. Colquhoun led a rush down the ice, broke through the defence and put the puck in the top right hand corner to put the icing-on theLcake; • .s*.PW The Mustangs played a good third period and their superior conditioning showed again, Gary Yeomen played a very strong and consistent game in the net, stopping 55 shots. Clin- ton only managed 25 at John Hayter. There were 15 penalties called, eight going to Exeter. The Mustangs would like to thank the fans for their support over the weekend and hope that more people will turn out to the games. The Mustangs are now in sixth place, a play-off spot, and are climbing, up. They need more support. The Bantams went into Grand Rend Tuesday night with Mike Gibbings laid up with the "flu" and Paul Priestal sitting out a game as 'a result of a late game miscon- duct in an earlier game in Goderich. These absentees proved too much for the remainder to make up and the usually tough Grand Bend crew proved ,their quality by eking out a 5-4 win. Clinton came on strong late in the third period but were vainly trying to tie the game as the final whistle sounded. Rob Heard and Dave Ar- chibald scored singles while Neil Colquhoun picked up a pair. • . Saturday Jan 6, Mitchell looked like a pushover after two periodS with the locals sit- ting on a 4-1 lead. Then it hap- pened — the worst single period of the season with Mit- chell scoring 7 goals to Clintons one to make it 8.5 Mitchell. Pete Thompson, Rob Heard and Paul Priestap picked up one apiece, Mike Gibbings got two with assists to Frank Flynn, Pete Thompson, Dave Clynick, Neil Colquhoun and Rob Heard. Sunday saw the boys eliminated from the Silver. Stick"rrl"Watford, Mooretown in a very hard ' game which could have gone the other way With a bit of luck. Mike Gibbings got the lone goal on a snap shot off a face-off pass from Dave Clynick. The Bantams will now con- centrate on zone play again with games still to be played with Seaforth, Mitchell, Goderich and Hensall. As well, they will compete against other W.O.A.A. Bantam "C" teams to establish a W.O.A.A. representative to advance to the OMHA playoffs. Playing before an excellent crowd last Friday night the Clinton Colts dumped the Lucknow Sepoys 9-6. The Colts led 5-2 after the first period and 7-4 after the second, Three Colt players each had a pair of goals. Bud Boyes, flutch Fleet and Rick Fremlin each netted the twine twice, Other scorers were Don $ar- tliff, "Joe" Livermore and Paul Draper. After playing a fine first period, the Colts seemed to sit back and let the Sepoys skate in on goalie, Dennis Fleischauer without much in- terference, On Sunday afternoon .in Milverton, the Colts played two good periods of hockey but sim- ply collapsed in the other period as the Four-,Wheel Drives motored over the Colts 9.6. Outplaying the Milverton club in the first period, the Colts couldn't score and went to the dressing room losing 3-1. In the second period the Colts were outplayed, outhustled and outscored as Fleischauer faced approximately 20 shots. Luckily for the Colts they emerged from the second period losing 6-2. The third period was the Colts best as they definitely outplayed the Four Wheel Drives,. Greg Burns and Rick -Fremlin each had a pair of goals Willie Don MacDougall and Laurie Colquhoun had one goal apiece. The Colts were assessed five minor penalties while the Four Wheel Drives had nine minor penalties. Again an excellent following of Colt fans attended the game in Milverton. This weekend the Colts are entered in the Second Annual Milverton Intermediate Tour- nament, On Friday night the Colts open the tournament by playing Atwood at 7:30. At- wood plays in the Tri-County Intermediate League. Win, or lose, they play again on Satur- day afternoon. Other teams en- tered in the tournament are Ar, thur, Kurtz.ville, Rlma, Listowel, Thorndale and or course, the .Milvertnn Four Wheel Drives, Colts next home game will be on Thursday, Jan 18 as the Colts do battle with the Milver- ton Club. Friday and Saturday, Jan 19 and 20, they will host, along with the Pee Wee Ponies, their longtime friendly rivals from Clinton, New York, as part of Minor Hockey Weekend in Clinton. It is the Hope of the minor Hockey committee that this event will receive the customary enthusiastic support of all Clinton parents and hockey fans.
