For the LIVING ROOM
KRAWCHUK-WARNER Kennedale, Texas. There is - or
was a police officer there who
will find some excuse to stop
any young person who happens
to look different, or even an
adult, driving an out-of-state
ear and giving him some reason
to notice them, I, personally,
can testify to having been
illegally stopped and
threatened with incarceration.
However, to be' fair, I must
- acknowledge that I was offered
a choice of which unjustified
charge I wanted to be arrested
on!
Thank God for a crusading
newspaper editor who hap.
pened to be with me, And,
unless you know such an editor,
I suggest you ask for the high-
way patrol to escort you
through that town.
But, before you try to under-
stand the impending violence
in our land, make a trip there
or somewhere else and see how
you like being arrested, denied
your rights, held without ac-
cess to legal counsel and
treated with utter contempt.
As one Black man said in
Oklahoma City, "It's like this.
If a white fist does the hitting,
it's a scolding, If a black fist
does the hitting, it's a jailing."
What do you do with
an abandoned church?

One of the difficulties which
a counsellor has in helping
people regain mental health is
getting them, in touch with
deep inner seething rage.
Most often, this inner rage is
either denied, or it is used to
justify ways of relalnig which
bring on destruction rather
than creativity. Every human
being is "wired" by the Creator
with the capacity for intense
rage. This may be seen in the
speed with which very young
babies will go into hysterics if
their needs are not met soon
enough. The "anger
mechanism" in them is
triggered by their discomfort
and they become panicked,
To do therapy with the
human psyche, or to under-
stand the way much of human
society works, one must know
this aspect, Without such un-
derstanding, it is impossible to
realize the real issues with the
blacks, the Indians, the
Chicanos, the . impoverished
whites, the ignored youth and
the exploited ghetto residents
of all groups.
A good way to get acquainted
with this feeling of helpless
rage is to buy a long-hair wig
and drive through the town of
Since Britain has seen 5,000
closed in the past few years,
free-lance journalist Michael
Cope was assigned by The
United Church Observer to find
out what had happened to
them. He reports in the current
issue that they've been turned
into candy factories, museums,
antique shops, warehouses, gas
stations, artists' studios and
week-end cottages. Some other
churches have been re-
incarnated for even more
bizarre and less sacred uses —
provoking a furore among for-
mer churchgoers who expect
the building to continue 'chur-
ch/ although they no longer
support it.
British churches are still
folding at the rate of 150 per
year, Cope reports. Most are
Protestant churches that can no
longer make ends meet. Arian-
:cially, ,he says,. The, - • - •

chgoing.
The changing attitude
towards religion that is closing
so many churches is explained
by the Rev, Geoffrey Davis,
curate of St. Boleton's Church
in Chelsea, right in the trendy
heart of London that is a haunt
of artists, writers, pop music
groups and mod boutiques:
"These days people have tur-
ned away from the church and
are doing their own thing a lot
more It doesn't mean they
don't know about God. A lot
do. It's just that they don't
seem to want to turn to the
church with their belief."
Population shifts and urban
redevelopment programs have
been other factors.
A problem second only to
supporting the existing chur-

ches has been what to do with
the unwanted ones.
One answer, according to
Michael Cope, has been to
promote unused churches as
exotic places to live. One of
London's most famous chur-
ches, Holy Trinity in South-
wark, is to be converted into
luxury apartments. The Church
of England managed to insist
that the outside remain un-
changed as a famous landmark.
But the vast inside is to be
transformed into bachelor
apartments overlooking a com-
munal kidney-shaped swim-
ming pool where the nave used

waiting list of tenants.

One church was converted

theologists, have their eyes on

Anyone preparing to buy an
old church — it's reliably
predicted that another 9,000 of
the remaining 50,000 churches
in Britain will eventually be
sold — has to be prepared to
spend money. Most have fallen
into an advanced state of
disrepair. They may require re-
roofing, having walls shored
up, foundations pinned, and
windows replaced, before such
twentieth century touches as
central heating can be added.
