‘ Fran My Window f. HOLMESVILLE ... And The Goose Is% Christmas just won’t be tlie same for me this year. Cer- tainly, I will have my family around me, there will be gifts, there will be plenty of food, there will be happiness to fill my cup to full and overflowing — but still, Christmas won't be the s:ame. ’ • It al) began way back in September when I quit smok ing. I’d always loved to smoke, Harmful though it was, com sidered shameful and degrad ing for a lady by some and a dirty expensive habit by Others, I gained pure pleasure from puffing on a “weed” and watching as the ashes formed neat little curls that used to be my money. But for the love of a man, 1 gave up smoking. My husband was trying hard to kick the habit but it was pretty difficult when your wife sat there blowing smoke rings that circled around your head; so I joined him in his battle to beat the bug. I was faithful to my oath. Nbt one cigarette has been be tween my lips since that Sept ember Day I swore to quit jsmoiking — but other things got between my lips, past them and down 'into my stomach — things like chocolate bars, cookies, sandwiches, ice cream. A month or' so ago, my bath room scales told the sad story. I’m always over-weight (I have been since I was bom I sus pect) but now I was over — over-weight — I was exhauSt- irigly plump. A visit to my doctor con firmed what I already knew. A diet was the only •prescription he would give for’ my fatigued, ’ ■flabby -frame- i I have stuck religiously -to my diet, believe it. pr not. ,1 have eaten salad until I hear crunching noises in my sleep; I’ve shunned desserts for carrot sticks, potatoes for spinach and gravy for celery, so. long that When I watch Bugs Bunny ori television I get "/ifl;, ' ’Ilux>t>g^ it all, I’ve lost five miserable pounds and no one but I can see it, Now Christmas . approaches, so near I pan smell the cran berry sauce drizzled1 all over the turkey .and see the big brown and white nuts in the cake and cookies, But that’s Shirley Keller as far..as my sense must tantalized for' nothing save salad, meat, vegetables and fruit juices must I taste this Christmas. • I’ll probably survive but at Christmas, who wants,to merely exist. I'd like, to live a little with a great big Christmas din-’ per and a king-size filter with my coffee afterwards — but that must not happen. That’s why Christmas won’t be the spine this yeiar for me —- but it still doesn’t stop me from wishing you and yours the Very Best Chris'timas. Ever and A- bundant Blessings in the New Year.
