geants,-were honoured. Sergeant Bill Phinney, a
radar 'lechnician'by trade, plans to reside in Lon
don and will be on the staff at the University-of
Western Ontario.- Sergeant Lew Ludlow was a
cooking instructor at the School of Food Services,
and will reside, in Clinton oh his retirement. Pic

A general meeting of
Huron .County Historical Soc
iety wag held in the Community
Hall at St. Helen's on Monday,
September 19. Mr. J. McLaren,
Society ■ vice-president chaired
the meeting. After reports from
the secretary and membership-
chairman, Mrs, Tait Clank gave
an account of recent work done
on the Society’s archives room
in Goderich. Magistrate Hays'
outlined tihe’pending formation
of committees required by the
expanding projects undertaken
by tihe-society. ,
The chairman then included
Miss W; Rutherford, former
district school teacher of St.
Helen!s;/who gave a spirited;
account of , the early, years in
“The. Queen’s Bush” telling of
the' pioneer ■ activities in the
community, around ‘ ‘Spittlebufn:

evening, Mr. Stephen Stothefs

His topic was “Agriculture in

Lucknow Mr. Stotihers ’ told
many interesting and . amusing
stories of the colorful char'-
acters who tackled' the prob
lems of pioneer days,’establish
ing schools and churches there
by building up the many thriv
ing communities in* Wawanotsh
Township. At tihe conclusion of
his talk Magistrate Hays mov
ed a vote of thanks for the two
guest speakers.
After Mrs. L. Poth arid Mrs.
E. Oddleifson gave brief ac
counts of tihe- centennial pro
jects being undertaken in Bay-
field village, the Womens In
stitute of St. Helen's Served de
licious refreshments. The meet
ing adjourned with a vote of
thanks to the Womens’ Insti
tute for their hospitality.
