Watch repairs and pearl re stringing. W. N; Counter, tfb It came through the mail! in a rather interesting looking en velope, my membership in the ■Order of the Good Time, It is a pretentious loipking document which honors any visitor who remains in Noya Scotia forsev- en days or more. The order has no dues or strict code of rules, ■but tour things ate asked of its members: “have a good time, remember us pleasantly; speak of us kindly and come1 back again.” The original order was found ed in 1906 at Fort Royal, Aca dia, by 'the great French ex plorer Samuel de Champlain. Worried about the prevalence of scurvy among his men, or land sickness as Champlain called lit. he became convinced that aside from the physical symptoms of the disease it was characterized by' extreme men tal depression. His reasoning proved sound tor he believed that :if men were kept in good cheer they might ward off a'U tacks of scurvy. The rigours of life in this new land called for courage and hardihood. Not only were they din danger from savage Indians, but most depressing of all were the cold winters and the great fear of a malady which affect ed nearly all of’the French col onists. Close to half of them died that first winter three hundred and sixty years ago. The foundation of good Cheer, Champlain considered, was good food and drink. He knew the country afforded an abundance of fish and game and So tor the corning years he proposed a club of jolly companions to be' called “The Order of the Good Time” or L’Ordre de Bon-temps. Rules were, that each, day a member of the order would act as stew ard or caterer, providing for the company whatever food he could procure, and such entertain ment as <hii!s ingenuity could die vise. This steward was called by his companions “Grand Master” and by more friendly Indians “actoctegic”. Giving himself time before it was his turn, the prospective Grand Master would buckle otn His hunting gear, roll up a skin for sleeping on the snow and venture into the woods in search of game and fish. He took with him friendly Indian guides with whom he must share his scanty rations. It was a perilous venture but seldom did they return without something good for .the table in sufficient quantity for the entire membership. You -can imagine what feasts they had and the roistering and singing of these jolly compan ions.
