PERCY TIPPETT Auct., HAROLD JACKSON Clerk, MEL GRAHAM 33, 4b mentioned the old French' Fortress of Louisbourg, in my last report, among places . to vi'siit during Centennial Yeiar. Bulilt by the French, at a cost of ten million dollars during ithe reiign of Louis XV, -the FortreS's of Louisbourg on Cape -Breton Island passed back and forth between French and . British hands, underwent two sieges and finally was blown up by British demolition troops 'in 1760. Developments in 'the 18th century which, in the long run, resulted1 jin Canaan eventually becoming one country, have connections with Louisbourg. The federal government, there fore, through the Department of Northern Affairs 'and Na tional Resources, is restoring a 'large part of the fortress, now a national historic park. At the Centennial Commission we think of the restoration as a Centennial project 'although perhaps -we can’t argue it is such on the basis of technical ities because it was started in 1961 and Will continue until the early 1970’s, at a cost over the years of at least $12,000,000'. The old city and a large part of the 'battle ground outside the ruined walls were set aside by. the government as a national historic site in 1928. -During 1935-36 -a museum was built facing the site of the citadel and it contains mementoes pre sented by citizens and relics which have been unearthed in the ruins of the fortress. Tine site was made- a national his toric park in 1940 and thou sands of visitors see it every year. .■■I ' -I.!,,.- .............................. . The new project for restor ation of the fortress will recon struct the main features of for tifications, the Chateau St- Louis, ia representative selection of smaller buildings, homes and harbor works, Some outlying features such as Siege works also are to be restored. As well as Canada, the New England states of Massachu setts, New Hampshire,-Connect icut, Rhode Island and Maine have strong historical connect ions with Louisbourg. Four thousand New Englanders were involved in the first siege and conquest of the fortress in 1744. (Britain handed Louisbourg back to the French in a 1748 treaty but again conducted a siege and conquered it in 1758. British demolition troops blew up -the fortifications in 1760.) Louisbourg was a key factor liin North American defence and trade for almost half a century. The study of that era can be a fascinating pastime for laymen and the restoration, of the old fortress -and buildings will give u's new insight into the history of our country and an under standing of life in ’those times. For .professional historians 'and archaeologists the activities on Cape Breton island provide more and more- information. The Louisbourg project is just one of the many which, during Centennial Year, will draw the attention of Canadians, and of friends abroad, to our interest ing heritage. -----------o—---------- Use Classified Ads.
