'Contributing to increased costs, as far as the county is concerned, are such matters as expenses pf coroner’s, in­ quests, county public libraries, county assessment commission­ er system, and. regional jails, “I would like to point out that 1967 is going to be another ygar in which our financing will possibly necessitate an increase in the counity 'rate,” Mr.. Berry .stated. “It is too early to pre­ dict exactly what might happen but you should bear in mind the following problems with which we will be faced: (1) an initial payment on •debenture issue for the County Home ($53,000 to $55,000); ‘ (2) simprfeuseidL cost of operat- ixig now uclditnoii. to County Home; (3) possibility of rontinuecl bundling programs as far as pur local hospitals are concerned.’' Continuing, the clerk-treasur- er pointe'd out that if there are no building plans for- 1967, then the ccunty would be able to divert s'pme of this money for hospital reserve purposes, to the County Home debenture., assisting greatly in financing for the upcoming year, Mr. Berry stated that .a fur­ ther problem for future financ­ ing concerns the situation at Centralia Air School. The county receives a considerable grant at the presept time, off­ set to swe extent by costs of road, maintenance, administra­ tion of justice, and welfare.. Last year the grant was $11,562,- In this regard, he favoured immediate actipn to have it designated as a “depressed area” for industrial purposes'. Huron Warden Kenneth Stewart Optimistic At June Council Session (By R. S. ATKEY) GODERICH — Larry Sales, zone forester with Ontario De­ partment of , Lands and For­ ests, presented his annual re­ port on the Huron Reforesta­ tion Sob erne to Huron County , Council Monday afternoon, and then was honoured with the presentation of a desk set by Reeve Ernest Talbot, Stanley, chairman of Agriculture and Reforestation, in behalf of Council. • After being in Huron County for nine years, he leaves short­ ly to take a new post as Farm Forester with .the Department at' Pembroke, Renfrew County. Mr. Scales pointed out that the cost of planting trees was only $1 per hundred to the own­ er, Total cost of planting this sprung was $1,220, with county and township sharing this cost equally. Trees planted number­ ed 58,880 on 71 acres in West Wawanosh, Tumberry, Stephen, Goderich and Ashfieid town­ ships. Mr. Sales stated that he re­ gretted leaving Huron County as his reforestation scheme was a “dream”, certainly unique.; It Was very gratifying to work in a counity Where reforestation is appreciated. . “And, too,” he added, “you are ’one of the greatest bunch of cigar smokers I ever met.” Which remark produced quite a chuckle! ATKEY) GODERICH—A note of opti­ mism was sounded at the open­ ing of the June Session of Huron County Council in Gode­ rich Monday morning, “Our blessings far outweigh our problems,” Warden Ken­ neth Stewart, reeve of McKil- lop -Township, remarked to the 36 other members and officials, press and public. There were no absentees. A bountiful harvst seems to be in the making, he comment­ ed. People should be thankful to live in this area. Dr. R. M. Aldis, director, presented a report of Huron County Health Unit. Miss Clare McGowan of the Child­ ren's Aid Society; Reeve Stew­ art Procter, Morris Township, of the Property Committee; Reeve Calvin Krauter, Brus­ sels, of the Ho'ard of Health; and Reeve Donald McKenzie, Asihfie;ld, of flue Road Commit­ tee; Deputy Reeve Elmer Hay- ter, Stanley Township, of the Warden’s and Personnel Com­ mittee. By request, the report of the Road Committee was consider­ ed 'and discussed clause by clause, County Engineer James W. They are training in the registered nurse dqss there. Douglas H. Miles Reports Rain Damages Beans (By R. S. ATKEY) GODERICH — Heavy rains last week and this have created serious problems for county bean growers, Douglas H. Miles, Huron Agricultural Rep­ resentative, told members of Huron County Council Monday afternoon. “Jiust this morning we got millions of millipedes in.a field of white beans which makes for a very bad situation,” he related. They were doing their best to cope with the situation. Mr. Miles reported that crops are looking, as Well as for sometime,” although in Hur­ on we rarely know a failure.” ■He commented that, recent legislation provides for interest- free loans whereby farmers mfake application to their bank. “However, very few in Huron County . have taken advantage of this,” he said’. Those who want to may insure theur fail wheat. Crop insurance is en­ tirely voluntary. Mr. Miles stated' that there is a trend , today toward more cash crops, which some people' might consider a way of life! but the growing of livestock is. still very basic to Huron County. He reminded Council of the importance of the International Plowing Match in October, and reported that more concessions had been.' signed up than ever before. GODERICH — A springy eighty this summer, Dr. A, Harold Taylor, grand old medi­ cal man of Goderich, was hon­ oured by Huron County Coun­ cil Monday afternoon on com­ pleting 41 years' service as CoUhty Gaol physician, He was. appointed in 1925. His father, the late Dr. Alex Tayjor, had held the same ap­ pointment for' dose to 40 years before him,, thus cpin/sitituting an 80-year span of service by father, and son. In presenting the veteran medico with a beautiful gold wrist watch in 'belh-alf Of the County \ Council, Stewart Proc­ ter, Morris, chairman of the- Property Committee, paid tri­ bute to his fine qualities, The. father had come to God­ erich in 1870, and had returned to practise in the county town after taking a postgraduate course at the University of Ed­ inburgh, .and father and son had been prominent in the liv­ es' of thousand’s of people in Goderich and vicinity, Th'e recipient showered praise on all ,those >gaol officials and staff with whom he had been associated. He mentioned par­ ticularly the gaoler, R. ,W. “Peg" 'Bell' who had seen ser­ vice in two wars overseas; to chief turnkey John Robertson; and to the entire staff who had extended to him a great deal of courtesy.
