There will be other child ren called "Lisa” in their own areas across Canada and the United States. It just so happens that for Western Ontario, our “Lisa” really has for her own first name Lisa. This was a happy coincidence; don’t you think? Lisa, four years of age, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Hyde of Hensall. Agr. College Grad. BEV HILL Son of Mr. and' Mrs. Gordon Hill, RR 1 Varna, received his diploma in agri culture yesterday (May 18) at the University of Guelph, Bev. has taken up farming with his' father, and is -the fifth generation of Mrs. Hill's family (Reid) to carry on this tradition on the family farm. CZ/UCI/ R. Woodsi Cricket, the frisky not-so-young beagle of “Middlewood”, spent the weekend with Carl and Lucy. They picked her up in Hensall, and she was most anxious until she got past Zurich. Cricket knows the way to the Veterinary Surgeon’s office there, and it is a trip which she abhors. Then up by the Old Forge she stood up to view the familiar village terrain. (Cricket has a good time at “The Hut” because “Mr.” cannot resist the pleading in her soulful eyes, and so she ' gets many more calories than at home. Also she is allowed off (the leash and there are so many delightful scents to track down. But “Mr,.” has to keep an eye on her or she’d sneak off farther afield, when he isn’t looking, to hunt for garbage. One day she gave tongue. There was the neighbour’s pet cat sitting a-top a compost pide. u Cats - are one of Crickets special dislikes, but she knew better than to climb up on the heap (to dislodge pussy. Cricket likes flowers, too, and she has rambled in and • out among the hundreds of daffodils, and smelled the hya cinths along the edge of the bed. She discovered where the groundhop lay in the Red Em peror tulips outside the sun room window, and some other varieties just coming into bloom attracted her .attention, Lucy suspects- the rabbits have been having a nibble here and there which makes Cricket keen on the scent. Then she followed “Mr.” up and down the vegetable gar den .on Sunday, and wagged her tail in approval when he stopped to note beets, .carrots, salsify and radish breaking through — but no sign of lettuce! 'Mr.” didn’t plant his potatoes too early, but he thinks they should be up ere now. But not one was signalled by Cricket’s wagging tail. However, he is saved the task of cov ering them in anticipation of frost. Past the potatoes, over against the hedge, Cricket’s -tail operated like a pendulum when “Mr.” discovered some large white -English violets. A (friend in Windsor had sent Lucy plants last year and she was afraid that they might not win ter here. ■One day last week, Lucy watched the birds and black squirrels at the suet feeder. The fat black squirrel hung up side down with his beautiful bushy tail over top of the feeder. By dint of pushing his nose in as far as he could without actually skinning it on the wire, he managed to get hold of a bacon rind and pull it out. Up he went into .the willow ■tree from which hung the suet feeder, to enjoy ihis tid-bit. Then there are the starlings. “Mr.” marks up the win dows tapping on them, to frighten them off!. As soon as they ■go the Downie or Hairy Woodpecker, Red-breasted Nuthatch or .Chickadees come. But they aren’t there long before back come those starlings. They really get most of the fat. One day a Chickadee perched on ia branch quite close to Carl’s face and looked right in his eyes, beseeching him to do some thing about it. Last week the cat bird tried her bill at the feeder. And Lucy saw a pair of robins trying to get some meat 'in the cold dry weather. They couldn’t hang on, but flew up at the box, fluttering their wings like a helicopter to stay in front of it momentarily to peck something through the screen. .On Monday, Lucy’s spouse reported a Ruby-throated humming bird busy at the current blossoms behind the hedge. Ahd overhead flew la belted Kingfisher on his way to try his luck at the river. It reminded “Mr.” that he had not yet cast his hook and line into river or stream.
