and citizens of the United
States -were- as alike as two

We may look, - alike, wqIR

visit across the border I have
to admit, Americans are •’a rpuch
friendlier people.
Our neighbors are not as re
served as we are reputed to be,
For instance, if an American is
placed at the same table with
you in a crowded restaurant
he doesn’t sit with head bowed,
gazing into the distance over
the top of your head or tuck
his nose into a newspaper. He
greets you With a broad grin
and, "Good Day, how are you?”
In the- southern states you
never pay a bill or make a pur
chase that the familiar "you
aill come back soon”' isn’t sin
cerely expressed.
There is- no doubt that the
citizens of the United States
are the 'great spenders of this
generation. In’ every shop or
supermarket there is evidence
of a shopping fever that seems
as catching as ' the buying •
frenzy we exhibit the week be
fore Christmas. The status
symbol is the money tree* that
apparently glows in every
home garden and window box
on their apartment balconies.

Latest figures released by
Niielsen Company show there
are 9,440 colour sets in use in
the area of Western Ontario.
This figure is not as low as one
would expect, when you con
sider the fact that Canadian
stations will not be colourcast
ing officially until -October 1 of
this year. • • , •
, This date should be pushed
ahead so .that Canadian TV
stations can-' compete with
American channels. .Right now,
these, nine -thousand sets ' are
being tuned in daily to. the
Buffalo or Cleveland stations,
depending on the individual’s
location in Western Ontario.
Some TV> stations are now
ready to send colour pictures
into Canadian homes. Let’s

Let's do it now while spring is

The new Federal Government policy of price support and direct payments
will give all dairy farmers increased returns for their milk, whether they ship
manufacturing milk, fluid milk or cream. The new policy is designed to bring
economic stability to the dairy industry and prevent runaway consumer price
increases by ensuring adequate supplies of dairy, products.

METHOD OF PAYMENT
/o o
I
I
MANUFACTURING MILK SHIPPERS: You will re-
ceive a direct payment from the Federal Government of
75 cents per hundredweight on all milk. Your payment will
beTnade monthly by.cheque from Ottawa.
FLUID MILK PRODUCERS: You will receive 75 cents
a hundredweight on all milk over 120 per cent of the
amount for which you receive fluid prices. For instance,
if your dairy pays you.fluid prices on 10,000 pounds in a
certain month, you will receive the government payment
on all’milk over 42,0Q0 .pounds. Cheques will be mailed
once a month from Ottawa directly to you.
CREAM PRODUCERS: You will receive 21.43 cents
per pound of butterfat (the equivalent of 75 cents per
hundredweight of milk with a 3.5% butterfat content).
Because time is required to complete the registration of
producers and to set up a reporting system, your cheques
will go out from Ottawa every three months.
REMEMBER TO REGISTER
NOTE:
Because the fat content of
milk varies, the 75 cent direct
payment is based oh a stan
dard 3.5 per cent butterfat
content in milk. This works
■- out to 21.43 cents per pound
of butterfat If your milk tests
4 per cent, then your payment
Will be fodr times 21.43 of
about 85 cents* per hundred
weight On the other h&nd if
your milk tests 3% then your
payment will be three times
21.43 or about 64 cents per
hundredweight
