name, given affectionately by
my operator who tired of the
■ staid term switchboard. \-
I could tell you many stories,
bpi - time . and my (creaking)
, cords will permit only za few.

is1 a maze of cords and keys and
clicking sounds, but to my
•friend' the operator I remain a
.constant joy;.' er, .most' of' the
time, when I remember to keep
my cords' from ' tangling, and
my. keys in rhythm. 1 :
Do you ever wonder what an
operator is thinking, when she
has time that is, as she busily
answers "Number, please?” ar
Boomville? Well. it is really
Strange, she .’will never.- forget
to be courteous and helpful, in
- any situation which may arise.
But she has1 her own problems,
' too, such' as ‘’“What shall I have
for dinner tonight?’.’ or "Sure
ly nothing else will happen be

tire?” Imagine. the confusion!1

tree. And operator's fingers fly,
■as she 'tries to answer everyone
in her‘‘usual cairn unhurried
voice, all the tame wishing
• folks would wait, at least until
.all the firemen are notified.
I wonder where Jerry our

when I snarl her' lines, and
gossipy Miss Jones cannot find
out who visited Janey .Smith
last weekend, * "Jonesy’’f was
“cut off” right-at the most in
teresting part . of -the story.
Jerry always'has my “innards”
runningsmoothly in no time at
all. He understands me like .no
one else does’.
Operator is glad we live'in a
■ community that is lively in the
summertime’with all,‘the tour
ists that 'gaze at me. and say
“how quaint”; some; of them,
' even remark that I look like
something out of the dark ages.
I 'wonder, what would 'they do
if I wasn’t here? 'and operator
too? then they would realize,
how ’ important we -are, and-
how we aim to please.”
But operator and I must’
leave you on a note of sadness,
for us, at- least. We are going
