WoodsJ Lucy, Carl and Erma with their guests, Mrs, H. B. Scudamore*, Canon and Mr's. F. H. Pauill, sat around the dining room table one night last week talking of birds. - Mr. started, the conversation by telling of his pet red breasted nut hatch, lighting on the board above the stable door when he opened it, and quite obviously invited him to replenish the supply of suet in the feeder. Carl also told of seeing a wren on May 3 which he thought might be a house wren, but more likely a winter wren judging by its colour and tail. Mrs*. J. E. Howard confirmed the latter opinion. ' Mrs. Scudamore has been feeding birds and enjoying them in the winter. for several years at Rexdale. She re cently returned -frOm a trip to Jamaica. t At the hotel' where She stayed1 at Montego Bay, the garden was lovely with roses, Bougainvillea andi Hibiscus1. Flitting about amongst the flowers and shrubbery were saf- . Iron sparrows — saffron in colour with an orange tinge 'oh the head. They descendeddn Hpcks when the proprietor and members of his family put out rice on the -patio table. Also in tee garden all the time, were mocking‘birds . One day with friends, Mrs; Scudamore visited a bird s'anctuiary in the hills. They were given vials of water and honey, and sat very still holding this with their forefingers outstretched. Before they were tired of this position, scissor- tail hurpming birds came and perched on their forefingers and sipped the nectar out of the vial. It Is also known as a streamer tail or a Doctor bird, and is tee national bird of Jamaica. She also noted the Jamaica redteteast. It is a small grayish bird, washed in green, with orange ■ red bill, short wings and tail, commonly called a green tody. •John Crow or garbage bird as it is commonly called! there is similar to our turkey vulture. It performs a useful purpose as a scavenger in keeping tee land clean in Jamaica.' , Canon Pauli related experiences on. a mountain in the Olympic4 range while they were visiting in the 'State of Washington. Three Canada Jays flew about. It soon became evident that they were begging, Finally Miss Carrie Dixon took a soda biscuit out of her purse. The birds perched on •the''finger tips of their out-stretched hands to pick off the pieces of biscuit. , i - ■In a garden ’ in Tacoma where .they were gues.ts, they identified1 western birds common to the State of Washington and Province of British Columbia. These included the Rufus sided Towhee, Golden crowned’ sparrow, brown-headed cow -bird, Cassius Finch (like our Purple Finch only much less . colour). In Victoria quail wandered around the streets and they Saw the Oregon juncots. From the train on the way home, they identified coots’, Scoups and Blue herons on Harrison Lake in B.C. > ' • Anyone want a pair of pigeons? There is a femlale having a great problem as to where she’ll lay an egg. ' “Mr. came in from (the barn one day last week and re- ’ ported that there Were a couple of pigeons coq-ing in t,he. dtyiveshed. There was a hole cut in the gable end by boys who were tenants at “The Hut” fifty odd yeans ago. He got up and nailed a shelf there for them, smacking his laps ih anticipation of squabs; However, they didn’t return. And on second thought he decided to forego teat delicacy and , Save himself some work in cleaning tip in tee shed, so he nailed a board over the hole! Next day *‘Mr.” learned that they were building a nests on a ledge under the verandah ‘roof at “Stonehaven”.,. A ' neighbour removed tee debris and put Stones up to prevent them budding again., ’ ■ .
