Mothers Always In Fashion
But Special Day On May 8
Of all the sweet sentiments
that spice our lives, probably
the most universal and endur
ing is the love for Mothers. At
the turn of this century, an
American woman — Anna
Jarvis — suggested setting
aside a special day for Mothers:.
It quickly caught on and
Woodrow Wils on, the * current
U.S.' President, made it official
in 1907. It has been celebrated
ever since on the second. Sun
day in May, this year falling
on May 8.

Volunteers were asked to

a demonstration of yoga exer

The door prize, donated by
the Base hairdresser, was won
by Mrs. Joyce Poire.

Actually, Miss Jarvis was re
viving an old custom from 19 th
Century England — “Mother
ing Day”. Mid-Lent Sunday,
Which was 'the special day when
dutiful sons and daughters went
“A-Moithering”, paying their
respect to Mom with flowers or
some small trinket.
Nowadays, whether the big
day for Mother is marked by
special treats like breakfast in
bed, floral bouquets, or dinner
out, there is ‘almost sure to be
at her breakfast place, to ex
press the family appreciation
and affection.
While the trend in greeting
cards in recent years has been
veering more and more toward
the' humorous and fun-card,
Mother’s Day is serious’ busin
ess, says Coutts Hallmark de
signers.
Her cards are probably the
most sentimental and sincere
of all the year’s commemor
ative messages. They are most
often traditional in design, with
flowers predominating, and af
fectionate verses inSide.
There are signs of more So
phisticated cards making quiet
inroads — more tailored in de
sign, or continental in favor,
'and with simplified verse or
brief prose message , — but
flowery graceful, cards in .soft,
pastel pinks and mauves arev
Still the top choice.
Some of the loveliest cards for
1966 will have transparent
overlays or colorful ■ floral
bouquets, -to give a delicate
misly look. Many have little
novelty touches like dainty
chiffon and pearled butterflies-,
or “diamond-like” appliqued
dewdrops set on bright posies.
Some are scenic — with
swans in serene settings; some
are charming Mother and child
studies. Many have detachable
sachets scented with Arpege.
Big dollar cards, with embossed
gold lettering and large satin-
cushion'ed floral sachets will be
among the most popular, be
cause, says Coutts
designers, there' is
trend toward metre
cards for Mother.
There are other
“special” cards too, such as
Mother’s Day “love note” for
Grandmother —- or tender mes
sages. from1 husband to beloved
“Wife and Mother”.
Attested to the fact that toe
feeling for Mother is serious
and sincere, the humorous
cards for Mother’s Day are
fetw and far between. There are
a few fun-cards however, like
the one with the. giant pin-on
button labelled: Worlds BEST
Mother with the printed senti
ment: “I can’t think of any
Mother whb deserves this . . .
anymore than YOU do! Happy
Mother’s Day!”

Action is!

Last Dance
The dance held on April 29
was a great dis-appointment:.
There was little action shown
by the student body of CHSS.
, Good music was supplied by
“The Arabians”, formerly “Law
rence and The Arabians”. Be
cause of the poor turnout at
the dances, it is unlikely the
Students’ Council will sponsor
another one this term.
