(News-Record Photo) i Clinton Bantams Win International Game A .strong Fish and Game Club Bantam team coached by Clarence Neilans outclassed Jerry Wstola’s. younger and less experienced St. Sebastian Ban­ tams from Dearborn, Mich.,, ■Saturday ' afternoon during Minor Hockey Day at Clinton Lilotns Arena. ■The Clinton squad got off to an early start with. Lawrence Elliott scoring unassisted at 2:01 of the .first period. John McPherson netted: the first, of his three goals ten minutes later assisted by Bob Langiile and Bill Stirling, To make1 the score 3-0 by the end of the first stanza, Bill Stirling scored on a passing play from Jim Keller and John Anstett. Stewart Mustard put on a fine display of .puck control during the first three minutes, of the second period as he scored twice on solo; efforts after skating through the en­ tire St. Sebastian team.. At the right is Frank Cernik, captain of the Dearborn Midgets who won second star honours during the game., (News-Record Photo) The Hugh Hawkins trophy was retained by Clinton on Sat­ urday evening when the Clin­ ton Lions Midgets shaded the Veteran1 of Foreign Wars - sponsored DeaiiDorn Midget team, by a 5-4 scorn The Dear­ born team was in the game/-all the way and the fans on hand were treated to a fast, exciting brand of hockey. Good defensive hockey was displayed by both squads in the first period and although some scoring chances were missed, it wasn’t until the half-way point in 'the period that the first goal- was scored. Clinton’s Cam Colquhoun was the marksman as he collected a pass from. Don Bartliff and beat Mark Sullivan with a good! shot. Dearborn’s Mike Blaszkowski scored an un­ assisted igoal at 15:10' to com­ plete 'the scoring in the first .period. The Lions Midgets outscored the visitors 2-1 in the second frame to take a 3-2 lead. Mel . Hohner got the locals1 off to an early start when he netted a pass from Cam Colquhoun and Rick Fremlin. With five minutes remaining in the period Colquhoun intercepted a Dear­ born pass while his team was a man short and went in to score on a solo effort. At 18:10, right winger Tim Byrnes put Dearborn back into the game as he converted a pass from Dave Hauncher into a goal. Clinton moved two goals a- head at the 4:08 mark of the third period as Butch Fleet slammed in a pass from Col- quhoun. Dave Hauncher kept (his team, in the game 'by scoring unassisted at 5:14 to again move to within one goal of the Lions Mid'gets. Rick Fremlin put the game ■away for the locals, at 8:35 of the third! period as he collected a clearing pass ,a.t centre just after serving a two minute trip­ ping penalty. Fremlin missed on his first shot, but after Colquhoun had picked up the ■ rebound. ' ~ made no med the the open born igoeiie was spnawl'ejd out of position. The visitors fought back hard and managed to score once more but they couldn’t beat Allan Howes, who played a brilliant game in the nets., for the tying goal. Dearborn’s final goal was scored by Dennis Meyers. Outstanding Players Cam Colquhoun won the Anstett Jewellers Ltd. trophy as the most valuable player in the game. The second star was awarded to Frank Cermik of Dearborn who received the K. W. Colquhoun trophy and Don Bartliff received the Clinton Laundry trophy for third star. A special award lor the best goal tender in the Bantam and Midget games between Clinton and Dearborn teams was won by Allan I-Iowes who. received the J. D. A minute later Langiile returned the favor by settling up McPherson for his ■third' goal of the game. Dennis Deline completed the goal par­ ade 'for the Clinton squad as he dented the twine on a pass­ ing play from Gordon Lavis and Clare Proctor. Dennis Riggin, formerly with the Detroit Red Wings and Jack Stod'dlar't, a former New York Ranger handled the re­ fereeing chores and handed' out five penalties, three to th'e win­ ners and two to St. Sebastian'. In an exciting see-saw battle which remained in doubt until the finial bell, the Clinton Legion Juveniles and. the Wing­ ham Juveniles played to a 7-7 deadlock, Larry • Pickett seared the tying goal with a minute left to play in the game. Winghiam bolted into an early lead When Grant Coultes beat goalie Gary Black on a pass from Wally Houston at 3:14. One minute later the visitor's tied the1 game when Tom Deyell scored and before the period ended they had picked up two more goals to take a 5-3 lead. Clinton’s lead was short-lived as Ron Deyell scored Tor Wing-- ham only seven seconds later to once more tie the game, Wally Houston put the visitors out in front at the 15:57 mark when he scored on a play with Grant Coultes, This, set the ■stage for Pickett's tying mark­ er at 18;44 on a pretty passing play with Dean Reid and Bill McKay. St. Sebastian Bantams Blank Adastral Park f The trap to Clinton Minor Hockey, Day by the; Dearborn teams was not an entirely los­ ing effort, as the St. • Sebastian Bantams whipped the Adastral Park Bantams by 'ah impressive 4-0 score. ■ This contest was played early Saturday morning at Clinton Dions Arena. The Aclastral Park Bantams played their best hockey in the first period and although, they couldn’t beat Goalie Bill Marts, they held St. Sebastian score­ less. At the 1:45 mark of the sec­ ond period Phil Beaukleare col­ lected a pass from. Bruce An­ derson and beat Gary McFar­ land to open the scoring for St. Sebastian. Four minutes later Bob Wancha netted the visitors second goal, assisted" by Ken Karaimon. Bruce Anderson set up Mike Mitchell who triggered the Dearborn team’s third" coun­ ter of the second stanza. Adas.tral Park had a few good chances in .the third pericd but were held off the score sheet by the St. Sebastian goalie. The final goal of the game was scared by Bob Nagy of the Dearborn squad as he beat McFarland unassisted. Referee Doug Andrews called only one penalty against the (Continued on page 10) Yeo Memorial Trophy Presented Jack Yeo (left), is shown above presenting the trophy given in memory of his son, The Don Yeo Memorial Trophy, to Bill McKay, captain of the Clinton Legion Juveniles, who received the honour as the outstanding Clinton player in the feature game of the annual Clinton Minor Hockey Day. The late Don Yeo was a member of many Clinton minor sports teams. On Minor Hockey Day in 1964 ■ Don was judged the most valuable player in the juvenile game, and in the junior-age game on Minor Hockey Day in 1965 he was picked as the out­ standing player of the game. Carl suspends opera­ tion and opens his shop to the minor hockey committee as a spot for the young­ sters to enjoy a lunch after their games.
