HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2009-10-01, Page 12The McGavins have once again
done Huron County proud on the
plowing stage, locking down two
first-place finishes in New Liskeard
last weekend at the International
Plowing Match.
Both Brandon and Jacob McGavin
of Walton finished first in their
respective divisions at the
competition, solidifying Brandon’s
trip to the Canadian championships
and winning Jacob a coveted trophy
this year.
Brandon will be travelling to New
Brunswick next year for the
championships, while Jacob was
awarded the Sidney Sisler Memorial
Trophy for having the highest points
total from the accumulative
competition across both age
divisions.
“There’s the 10-16 age division
and the 16-21 age division. I
finished in first place every day in
my division, so I won my division,
but I also won the Sidney Sisler
Memorial Trophy as the overall
junior champion,” Jacob said.
Unfortunately, as he is under 16,
his division does not allow for a
continuation to a Canadian
championship, so his season is over,
something Jacob says he thinks,
“stinks.”
Jacob also finished in first place
last year, but didn’t win the Sidney
Sisler Memorial Trophy, something
he is proud of achieving this year.
Jacob says that it was a good way to
finish one of his last years in the
younger division, preparing him for
the senior division, which he will be
competing in two years from now.
“This was my second-last year in
the younger division, which means it
was my second-last year with a
coach,” he said. “This year definitely
taught me to be more independent. I
learned a lot this year and I learned
how to apply it as well.”
Brandon, who also won his
division last year, went on to capture
the Canadian crown as well. He said
that achieving on the highest
possible level this year was very
important to him and that a defense
of his Canadian title was at the
forefront.
“I did not want to lose without a
fight this year,” Brandon said. “I
really wanted to win this one and
defend my Canadian championship.”
Brandon says he felt the pressure
to perform this year, where he didn’t
necessarily feel it last year. In 2008,
he was just 16 and was in his first
year in the senior division, with
limited expectations.
“I was just really nervous about it
this year,” he said. “Last year I was
in the new division for the first year
and I don’t think anyone expected
me to do well, so there was nopressure. Now after winning, therewas a lot more pressure on me thisyear.”Now that Brandon has won theopportunity to defend his title, the
pressure is on, but is confident as
well.
The tradition and importance of
both of their achievements have not
been lost on either of them. They
know that they have done their
families, the Walton community and
all of Huron County proud with what
they have achieved over the last
three years.“It’s been a really great run.Brandon and I are not verycompetitive with each other, but weare with others and we thought itwas great that these trophies will be
in Walton for their third year now,”
Jacob said.
“I’m just so proud that we’re
keeping the tradition alive of
plowing in Walton and the McGavin
family from my great-grandfather all
the way down. It’s pretty amazing
when you stop and think about
it.”

END USES FOR SCRAP TIRES
Scrap tires are a valuable resource when reused or recycled into new products.
Examples of recycled uses in Ontario are:
• Tire-derived aggregates used instead of stone,
• Crumb rubber that goes into everything from sports fields and
hockey rinks to quieter, more durable roads,
• Finished goods like floor mates, soaker hoses, mouse pads and
rubber components for your car’s engine.
