The Citizen, 2009-10-01, Page 9The taste of summer was great and now cooler, wet weather has arrived. It must be harvest time. Some farmers were able to get off their white beans, but I see there are more out there. Some guys have planted their wheat, but there is lots of work still ahead. The large crane was on the scene at Walton’s P&H last week. It was getting the rest of the repairs done to the elevator. Damage was sustained in the windstorm a few weeks back. Reports are that they are ready to go to receive the fall harvest as soon as the weather co-operates. Visiting from LaCombe, Alberta, for a week or so around the area, were Clem and Phyllis Steffler, formerly of Brussels. They had been on a trip to Newfoundland, rented a car and toured their way to Ontario. They spent time catching up with relatives in the area, their daughter in Toronto, had dinner out with Neil and Ruth Schade at the Legion fish fry, and saw their old neighbours. They have been away a month and have now returned to their home in Alberta. Congratulations to Jim and Anne Cooper on celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary on the weekend. They had dinner with family members in Elmira. Enjoying a weekend away were three couples from the area. Brad and Christine Knight had received a wedding gift from their friends that included a night away, dinner, a show and a chauffeur. They were very surprised when the chauffeur showed up to pick them up and it was Jim McDonald with wife Linda and friends Jim and Danica McNichol. The six of them stayed at the Harbour Castle, had dinner at Moxy’s and attended the Jersey Boys show at the Toronto Centre of the Arts. They had a great time as good friends always do. Surprise! It takes a lot of planning to get one over on Aunt Marilyn McDonald, but the family finally pulled one off. They surprised Marilyn with a belated get together to celebrate her 75th birthday (which was in February). It was held at a beautiful bed and breakfast called the Shall-Be-Inn, just south of Exeter. It was an open house with many of her family and friends attending to wish her a belated happy birthday. The guests were asked to write down a story or remembrance of Marilyn to be put together in a book for her to enjoy later. It was a lovely afternoon with nearly 50 people enjoying the get together in the spacious beautiful Inn. A very thoughtful gesture by the Blake family was enjoyed by Leona McDonald last week. George and Marie, Jim and Evelyn and Clara Blake along with Leona, travelled to Bright to attend the Walters Family Theatre. They went in the morning and enjoyed a delicious dinner prior to the afternoon performance. The members of the Walters family entertained those attending with a wonderful musical performance. It was a lovely day for all. Our get-well wishes go out to Mert Hackwell as he has had knee surgery last week. Doreen Hackwell has also been in hospital. Craig Hackwell is home for a couple of weeks to lend a helping hand to his parents. The International Plowing Matchheld near Earlton is over and is beingtouted as a complete success. (Vicky Bremner photo) By Jo-Ann McDonald The September general meeting of the Brussels Legion was held on Tuesday evening, Sept. 22 with the annual visitation of the Zone Commander Russ Berry and Deputy Zone Commander Andy Rogers in attendance. There were 15 Comrades present. The visitors inspected the books for the treasurer, poppy and Nevada chairman. They also checked over the minute books from the previous year as well as inspecting the premises. It was a good meeting with many of the chairmen giving positive reports on their committees. Donations were approved for six requests. The Zone Commander’s remarks included congratulating the Branch for its pro-active approach in fundraising towards making the Branch barrier free, and for sustaining a solid financial footing. A social time followed the meeting. The Friday night suppers have started with a great turnout this past week for roast beef dinner. There were over 45 out to enjoy the meal. The menu for this week will be ham and scalloped potatoes. The senior officers of the Cadet Corps were at the Branch on Saturday morning for orienteering with Lieutenant Miller. The Huron County men’s dart league was at the Branch on Saturday afternoon. There were nearly 70 on hand to enjoy the team dart play. Volunteers for the afternoon were Harold Bridge, Nanci Ducharme and Jo-Ann McDonald. The craft show is scheduled for the first weekend in November and more crafters are needed. There are still tables available so contact Linda Bird or the Branch if interested. BBLLYYTTHH PPRRIINNTTIINNGG IINNCC..
