Walton defeated Exeter in the first game July 28. The team kicked off Aug. 4 with a win over Belmore. Belmore was the first to put runs on the board scoring 2 in the first inning then added another in the third. Walton retaliated with two runs in the bottom when Steve Hopf hit a solid triple to score Darryl Houston and Scott McDonald. The Brewers tied the game at three apiece in the fourth. Justin Pipe got on with a single and scored home on a triple by Houston. Pitching for Walton was Scott Cox who gave up a homerun to Belmore’s Ben Shaus to open the fifth inning. Two more Belmore runs scored and Scott Leonhardt came in to pitch and shut down the Belmore attack. Walton down by three in their half of the fifth, earned two runs back on a double by Adam Verkley who scored home on the homerun by McDonald. Down by one in the sixth, Ron Stevenson earned first with a single, then stole second to put the tying run in scoring position. A single by Houston moved him to third, then Leonhardt hit a double to score both runs. Verkley hit a single to score Leonhardt for Walton’s final run for a total of eight. Leonhardt struck out eight batters in the 2 1/2 innings he pitched. The final score was 8-6 for Walton Brewers. The Brewers final three games of the year will be played in the next six days before the year-end tournament to be played in Blyth on the weekend starting Aug. 28. Incoming! Saturday a ball team from Lucknow joined us at a club for a nine-hole scramble. The guys and gals enjoyed some lunch and refreshments and even though they played their last couple holes in a steady rain, said they had a great time. The sign-up sheet for the John Malick memorial tournament Sept. 9 is at the pro shop. The members sure knew how to get the manager in a good mood to finish last month at the club. Volunteers were out and working July 27. Don Rae replaced a much- needed broken board on the patio. Linda Walker not only weeded around the tee blocks but brought new flowers to replace the damaged ones.
