Blyth Public School band and young soloists entertained the 20 seniors who gathered for a potluck lunch together at Memorial Hall on Wednesday, Feb. 25. It was good to see that so many of the members of the band are still with it several years later It was also good to learn that there are new members who are equally keen about music. The president said that she had read that children who study music develop better powers of concentration and longer attention spans. She paid tribute to Jane Badham, the conductor, for her dedication to the music program. Jean Nethery reported on the annual bus trip. This year it is to be to hear the Walters Family Christmas Concert on Saturday, Aug. 15. There are still a few seats left. Kay Hesselwood invited the members to a luncheon that the Legion Ladies Auxiliary is putting on March 12 to raise money for their building addition fund. The Seniors will meet again on March 25 beginning at noon with a potluck lunch. All seniors in the community are welcome. Sympathy is extended to the family of Don Glousher who passed away this past week. Jean and Lawrence Plaetzer’s granddaughter, Kaleigh Foran is in the Dominican Republic as part of her university course in social justice and peace. She is there learning about inequities and injustices happening there and is also working as part of a group helping to build houses and get a clean water supply and schooling. There are people who have been lured there from Haiti by being told that they can get a job on the plantations, but when they get across the border their immigration papers are stolen. They are blackmailed to work on the plantations basically as slaves or be reported and jailed. The corruption in the country makes this continue and those people live in extreme poverty. Kaleigh can get clothing directly to these people. If you care to donate a cheque may be given to Kaleigh’s mother Sherry Foran. The used clothing is purchased at Value Village where clothing items cost approximately $2 each. Sherry will provide a copy of the sales receipt if required. Results of the Feb. 23 euchre were: high lady, Betty Archambault, 71; high man, Dorothy Carter, playing as a man, 75; lone hands, Ruth Shiell and Marie Glousher, tied with three each, Lawrence Plaetzer, three; low lady, tie - Kay Hesselwood and Jean Nethery, 50; low man, Russell Cook, 45.
