HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2009-03-05, Page 2PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MARCH 5, 2009.We’re in the season of Lent now.By the Christian calendar, that’s thetime between Ash Wednesday andEaster. It’s a time of contemplation,a time to consider the historicalJesus and how that story may affectour lives today. Churches haveprepared for this time with study, reflections and of course impendingpreparations for the high times of
Easter.
The temperature outside todayleaves a lot of room for that kind ofthinking. Mind you, the snow drops wereobserved last week in Cranbrook.Spring will come.Breezes and migration came tomind when several folks spotted abald eagle last month. Thismagnificent bird was observed in
full flight along the Maitland in the
village at least twice. Don’t you
wonder where she was headed and
where she has been?
A few more tanned faces were
seen in the village last week. All
reported it was good to get away
from all our snow but it was also
good to get back to good old Huron
County.
Plans are being made for the
upcoming March break – simple
things like sleepovers at Grandma’s,
ski trips and even rugby teams fromMadill heading to England. A few ofour local youth are in that group, theitinerary is set and darn, they don’twant me to chaperone. Mayeveryone enjoy the change ofroutine. The last Saturday of this month iswhen you need to get out your hatand gloves (not the winter ones) and
come have tea with Queen Victoria
and her butler. This is the time for
the Queen’s second annual
traditional tea. If you missed last
year she’ll happily receive you
Saturday, March 28 between 1 and 4
p.m. at Brussels United Church.
Save the date and your appetite for
the spread expected with tea with
Victoria.
Dig out your green wear, you’ll
need them soon.
By now, Betty G.W.
Taking the course
Jaime Johnston was one of the many Brussels Public
School students who made their way through an obstacle
course that included throwing rubber chickens, a tent,
climbing a snow mountain and a hula hoop last week at the
school’s Winter Fun Fest. There were several stations,
both at the school and at the Brussels, Morris and Grey
Community Centre throughout the day. (Shawn Loughlin photo)

By Jo-Ann McDonald
The general meeting of the
Brussels Legion Branch was well
attended on Tuesday evening, Feb.
24. It was an important meeting for
the Comrades as special guest
Comrade John Rutledge was on
hand to give the presentation of the
proposed barrier-free addition.
There were many questions that
John answered and discussions on
the amount that needed to be raised
and funding options. The Comrades
voted to proceed with the next step
in the process.
A notice of motion, along with the
particulars of the project, have been
mailed to all Comrades for
consideration and Comrades are
asked to attend the March general
meeting to address the issue. The
meeting will be at 8 p.m.
The Thursday night darts had 10
people taking aim at the boards. The
first-place team was Lawrence
Machan and Marlene Little. Second
place went to Greta Zehr and Sandra
Josling. The high shot of the night
went to Lawrence and the high start
of the night went to Glen Zehr.
The Friday night supper of lasagna
was well attended. This week is
roast beef.
It was a quiet weekend at the
Branch, the last one for awhile. The
Branch is going to be quite busy for
the next couple of months and
everyone’s help will be needed.COMING EVENTS

One of the stations at last week’s Winter Fun Fest for the
students of Brussels Public School was road hockey, a
Canadian staple. Some of the other stations were skating,
bowling and an obstacle course at the Brussels, Morris
and Grey Community Centre and several others back at
the school. Nick McArter, left, Dakota Peters, centre, and
Emily Mitchell, right, fought for the puck while Katie
MacFarlane, top, looks on. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
